Let us turn to the next set of sins in Chapter 8: \u201cGluttony \u2013 Food, Drinks and Drugs\u201d.<\/p>\n

What makes the \u201csins of gluttony\u201d possible?\u00a0 Pleasurable substances plus the psychology (or neurophysiology) of addiction make good candidates for \u201csymptoms\u201d.<\/p>\n

What puts the \u201cthe sins of gluttony\u201d into context?\u00a0 The \u201ccrimes\u201d of obesity, intoxication, drunkenness and addiction made good candidates for \u201ccrimes\u201d.<\/p>\n

Again, we find opportunity to expand the concept of \u201ccrime\u201d.\u00a0 Menninger limited \u201ccrime\u201d to the jurisdiction of the state.\u00a0 \u201cCrime\u201d could also include the punishing natural consequences of the sin.\u00a0 Thus, the word \u201ccrime\u201d might be replaced by a more general term, such as lawnature<\/sup> or lawessential<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Similarly, Menninger\u2019s idea of \u201csymptom\u201d was \u201csomething that would be subject to improvement by a psychoanalyst or mental health worker\u201d.\u00a0 We can expand this concept by substituting the word \u201cdisposition\u201d for \u201csymptom\u201d.<\/p>\n

The horizontal axis of \u201clawessential<\/sup>(sin(disposition))\u201d would be, for this set of sins, \u201cthe punishing consequences by both nature and state(sins of gluttony(the psychology or neurophysiology of pleasurable substances)).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
