(Part 1 of 4)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0001 Last month, the Razie Mah blog presented the end of&nbsp;<em>Comments on David Graeber and David Wengrow&#8217;s Book (2021) &#8220;The Dawn of Everything&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;(available at smashwords and other e-book venues).&nbsp;&nbsp;The blog is titled&nbsp;<em>Looking at Graeber and Wengrow&#8217;s Chapter (2021) &#8220;The State Has No Origins&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question arises, &#8220;Does&nbsp;<em>the weird confounded diagram developed in this commentary<\/em>&nbsp;have relevance to other inquiries covering the human condition in our current Lebenswelt?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0002 This blog offers an answer, by way of example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three years before the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter in the constellation of Aquarius, Athina Karatzogianni and Andrew Robinson publish an article in the&nbsp;<em>Journal of International Political Theory<\/em>&nbsp;(2017, Vol. 13(3) 282-295).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The British scholars are experts in communication and sociology.&nbsp;&nbsp;Thier article investigates the role of anarchy&#8230; er, &#8220;anarchy&#8221;&#8230; in state securitization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0003&nbsp;<em>The weird and confounded diagram that appears in the commentary on Graeber and Wengrow&#8217;s book<\/em>&nbsp;looks like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide01.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide01.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide01-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 01<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The goal of this blog<\/em>&nbsp;is to briefly review Karatzogianni and Robinson&#8217;s article and to demonstrate that&nbsp;<em>a derivation of this figure<\/em>&nbsp;maps onto the topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0004 What is this article about?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full title is&nbsp;<em>Schizorevolutions versus Microfascisms: The fear of anarchy in state securitisation<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Needless to say, the terms are specialized descriptors.&nbsp;&nbsp;But of what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0005 According to the above figure, academics may confound the state<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;with sovereign acts and decrees<sub>2bC<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The &#8220;state&#8221;<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;is defined.&nbsp;&nbsp;What is defintion?&nbsp;&nbsp;Definition<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the normal context<\/em>&nbsp;bringing&nbsp;<em>the actuality of a spoken word<sub>2<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;into relation with&nbsp;<em>the potential of meaning, presence and message<sub>1<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state<sub>2b<\/sub>&#8216; is a term arising from the presence of domination<sub>1b<\/sub>&#8216;.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, domination<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;must also be defined.&nbsp;&nbsp;The term, &#8220;domination&#8221;<sub>2a<\/sub>, emerges from (and situates) the possibilities inherent in&nbsp;<em>the sole legitimate use of violence<\/em>&nbsp;(similar to presence)<sub>1a&#8217;<\/sub>,&nbsp;<em>the administration of information<\/em>&nbsp;(like meaning)<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the promotion and guidance of charismatic influence<\/em>(like message)<sub>1a<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;I call policing, bureaucracy and maintaining reputation, &#8220;the three imperatives<sub>1a<\/sub>&#8220;.&nbsp;&nbsp;The three imperatives<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;underlie domination<sub>2a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0006 Here is a picture of&nbsp;<em>the way that Graeber and Wengrow define &#8220;state&#8221;.<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;This is the path of definition (P).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide02.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide02.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide02-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 02<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0007 The way of differentiation is developed in the chapter on presence in Razie Mah&#8217;s masterwork,&nbsp;<em>How To Define The Word &#8220;Religion&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;(available at smashwords and other e-book venues).&nbsp;&nbsp;Even though&nbsp;<em>the differentiation of an originary, undifferentiated, social world<\/em>&nbsp;follows&nbsp;<em>the logic of Peirce&#8217;s categories,<\/em>&nbsp;the process is also historic.&nbsp;&nbsp;Since the start of&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt,<\/em>&nbsp;the society<sub>C<\/sub>, organization<sub>B<\/sub>&nbsp;and individuals in community<sub>A<\/sub>&nbsp;have historically differentiated into&nbsp;<em>three tiers of interscopes<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;As a result, realization of&nbsp;<em>the two types of religion<\/em>, corresponding to&nbsp;<em>organizational objects<sub>2aC<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>a relational object<sub>2cC<\/sub><\/em>, follows&nbsp;<em>the logic of the differentiation of category-based nested forms<\/em>&nbsp;and occurs in&nbsp;<em>history<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture of the three-level interscope for the society<sub>C<\/sub>&nbsp;tier.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is the path of differentiation (Q).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide03.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide03.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide03-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 03<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0008 Needless to say, neither Graeber and Wengrow nor Karatzogioanni and Robinson are aware of the the path of differentiation.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, they are not aware that they confound P and Q.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in the introduction, the latter authors suggest that the securitisation discourse (the administration of information, P2<sub>1a<\/sub>) by the state<sub>2b&#8217;<\/sub>&nbsp;arises from the perception of &#8220;new threats&#8221; (charismatic influence outside of state supervision, P3<sub>1a<\/sub>) and attempts to fix network flows&nbsp;&nbsp;(through violence, P1<sub>1a<\/sub>).&nbsp;&nbsp;This also means that the normal context of sovereign power<sub>3bC<\/sub>&nbsp;brings the actuality of sovereign acts and decrees<sub>2bC<\/sub>&nbsp;into relation with the potential for &#8216;order&#8217;<sub>1bC<\/sub>.&nbsp;However, now sovereign power<sub>2bC<\/sub>&nbsp;is confounded with definition<sub>3b<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The state<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;is mixed up with sovereign acts and decrees<sub>2bC<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Plus, &#8216;domination&#8217;<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;is entangled with &#8216;order&#8217;<sub>1bC<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0009 Here is a picture of&nbsp;<em>how the confounding seems to play out<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide04.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide04.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide04.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Slide04-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 04<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0010 Karatzogianni and Robinson immediately go on to say that their argument is based on a distinction between states and networks.&nbsp;&nbsp;Furthermore networks divide into two forms, such as affinity-active and non-affiliating-reactive, as well as between schizoid (non-affiliating active) and paranoic (non-affiliating reactive).&nbsp;&nbsp;Then, they discuss the ramifications in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To me, the distinction between the state<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;and its domination<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;of organizational objectives<sub>2aC<\/sub>&nbsp;of insitutions<sub>3aC<\/sub>redefines<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;institutions<sub>3aC<\/sub>&nbsp;as networks<sub>3a<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Order<sub>1bC<\/sub>&nbsp;melds with efforts to control the content level<sub>1b<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;While &#8220;order&#8221; sounds legitimate.&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Control&#8221; does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Order<sub>1bC<\/sub>&nbsp;establishes peace among instituions<sub>3aC<\/sub>&nbsp;working<sub>2aC<\/sub>&nbsp;independently based on their own righteousness<sub>1aC<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Plus, that righteousness<sub>1aC<\/sub>&nbsp;does not pay tribute to the perspective level actuality<sub>2bC<\/sub>&nbsp;of fear.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Control<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;envisions threats emanating from the open space of active desire<sub>1aC<\/sub>&nbsp;and aims to moderate these through domination<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;(using P1, P2 and P3 of the three imperatives underlying the definition<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;of domination<sub>2a<\/sub>).&nbsp;&nbsp;Consequently, attempts<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;to supervise<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;and narrow the space<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;of righteousness<sub>1aC<\/sub>, sanction<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;and outlaw<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;objects<sup>org<\/sup><sub>2aC<\/sub>, and wage war<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;on institutions<sub>3aC<\/sub>&nbsp;that do not conform to state<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;control<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;expand into the fabric of everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0011 The state&#8217;s<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;acts and decrees<sub>2bC<\/sub>&nbsp;are not oriented to protecting civilians or non-state actors.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, the normal context is not sovereignty<sub>3bC<\/sub>, but a defining power<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;(responsible to a higher loyalty<sub>2cC<\/sub>, so to speak).&nbsp;&nbsp;Yet, this defining power<sub>3b<\/sub>speaks the language of sovereignty<sub>3bC<\/sub>, just as Graeber and Wengrow do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0012 But, who is doing the defining here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look at the perspective-level actuality<sub>2cC<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fear<sub>2cC<\/sub>&nbsp;is not an emotion.&nbsp;&nbsp;Fear<sub>2cC<\/sub>&nbsp;is a demiurge, a relational object, an object that brings everyone into relation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fear<sub>2cC<\/sub>&nbsp;defines<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;the securitisation state<sub>2b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0001 Last month, the Razie Mah blog presented the end of&nbsp;Comments on David Graeber and David Wengrow&#8217;s Book (2021) &#8220;The Dawn of Everything&#8221;&nbsp;(available at smashwords and other e-book venues).&nbsp;&nbsp;The blog is titled&nbsp;Looking at Graeber and Wengrow&#8217;s Chapter (2021) &#8220;The State Has No Origins&#8221;.
