is a placeholder in a system of differences for speech.&nbsp;&nbsp;Since&nbsp;<em>the spoken word<\/em>&nbsp;cannot picture or point to anything, as would be expected for&nbsp;<em>hand talk,<\/em>&nbsp;then we project&nbsp;<em>meaning, presence and message<\/em>&nbsp;into&nbsp;<em>the langue that is arbitrarily related to this speech act<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Graeber and Wengrow explicitly abstract the term, &#8220;domination&#8221;, as a label for (what I suspect is) the presence or the message underlying the term.&nbsp;&nbsp;The state<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emerges from (and situates) the potential of domination<sub>1<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0194 The masterwork,&nbsp;<em>How To Define the Word &#8220;Religion&#8221;<\/em>, offers another option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The option arises while trying to elucidate the presence<sub>1<\/sub>&nbsp;underlying the word, &#8220;religion&#8221;<sub>2<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Religion includes institutions.&nbsp;&nbsp;These institutions are different from sovereign power.&nbsp;&nbsp;How so?&nbsp;<em>Righteousness<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the potential underlying institutions<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Order<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the potential underlying sovereign power<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Order<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;belongs to the situation-level of an interscope.&nbsp;&nbsp;Righteousness<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;belongs to the content-level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the situation level, sovereign power<sub>3b<\/sub> is the normal context where sovereign acts and decrees<sub>2b<\/sub>\u00a0emerge from (and situate) the possibilities inherent in order<sub>1b<\/sub>.\u00a0\u00a0Sovereign power<sub>3b<\/sub>\u00a0virtually situates institutions<sub>3a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What we call the &#8220;state&#8221;<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;should correspond to&nbsp;<em>the actuality<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;of sovereign power<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;contextualizing the potential for order<sub>1b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Slide27.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Slide27.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Slide27.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Slide27-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 27<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0195 According to Graeber and Wengrow, the term, &#8220;state&#8221;, appears in the French lexicon in the late 1500s, about a century after Christopher Columbus&#8217;s voyage of 1492 U0&#8242;.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the late 1800s, a German philosopher defines the &#8220;state&#8221; as&nbsp;<em>an institution, within a given territory, claiming a monopoly on the legitimate use of coercive force<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This implies that the term, &#8220;state&#8221;, labels something more than&nbsp;<em>the actuality of sovereign acts and decrees<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0196 Why does the state<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;require&nbsp;<em>a monopoly on coercive force?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How else can it enforce order<sub>1b<\/sub>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0197 Does&nbsp;<em>the above figure<\/em>&nbsp;offer a definition of state<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;that is familiar to modern social scientists?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No and yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No,&nbsp;<em>this diagram of the &#8220;state&#8221; as an actuality<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;located within a normal context<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;and situating a potential<sub>1<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;is innovative.&nbsp;&nbsp;It belongs to&nbsp;<em>the first comprehensive picture in anthropology composed of triadic relations<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The diagram relies on&nbsp;<em>the differentiation of nested forms<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The first differentiation yields a nested form composed of three terms: society<sub>3<\/sub>, organization<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;and individual in community<sub>1<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Second, each of these terms differentiates into a nested form.&nbsp;&nbsp;Third, each element in each nested form differentiates, resulting in&nbsp;<em>a three-level interscope<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The result is&nbsp;<em>three tiers of interscopes, corresponding to society<sub>C<\/sub>, organization<sub>B<\/sub>&nbsp;and individual in community<sub>A<\/sub>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0198&nbsp;<em>The first two levels of the society<sub>C<\/sub>&nbsp;tier<\/em>&nbsp;correspond to&nbsp;<em>content-level institutions<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>situation-level sovereign power<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Slide28.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Slide28.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Slide28.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Slide28-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 28<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Graeber and Wengrow do not know this diagram.&nbsp;&nbsp;Yet, they write as if they do.&nbsp;&nbsp;Social complexity<sub>C<\/sub>&nbsp;arises as diverse institutions<sub>3aC<\/sub>&nbsp;pursue their organizational objectives<sub>2aC<\/sub>, based on a righteousness<sub>1aC<\/sub>&nbsp;that interpellates individuals in community<sub>A<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>In our current Lebenswelt,<\/em>&nbsp;righteousness<sub>1aC<\/sub>&nbsp;calls individuals in community<sub>A<\/sub>&nbsp;into organization<sub>B<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The need for order<sub>1bC<\/sub>&nbsp;may arise when institutions compete with one another and come into conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suppose that may occur when institutions find something to fight over.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0192 Graeber and Wengrow begin&nbsp;their wide-ranging discussions concerning everything anthropological&nbsp;with&nbsp;a question on the origins of social inequality.&nbsp;&nbsp;In chapter ten, they implicate&nbsp;the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, they face a problem.&nbsp;&nbsp;Can&nbsp;the stateaccount for&nbsp;the origins of social inequality&nbsp;if there are&nbsp;no origins to the state? 0193 The spoken word, &#8220;state&#8221;, is the topic of chapter ten of Graeber and Wengrow&#8217;s book.
