The first section is \u201csin manifested as pride\u201d.<\/p>\n

After listing various manifestations of pride, Menninger raised the issue of narcissism.<\/p>\n

Narcissism is a \u201cclinical term\u201d, defined as \u201ca disability that could respond to medical mending\u201d.\u00a0 But this does not preclude the view that narcissism is moral dereliction; that is, a \u201csin\u201d.<\/p>\n

Menninger\u2019s conclusion:\u00a0 Character correction should not belong to the private domain of any single professional discipline (137).<\/p>\n

Consider this claim in terms of nestedness.\u00a0 Sin belongs to the realm of actuality.\u00a0 We have seen from previous blogs that \u201cthe possibility that underlies sin\u201d is \u201csymptom\u201d (which would correspond to a clinical axis) and (from chapter 7) and \u201clack of conscience\u201d (which would correspond to the group-think axis) – or perhaps – \u201cfree will\u201d (which would correspond to a virtuous axis that seems to be an alternative to the group-think axis).<\/p>\n

Now, apply this to the \u201csins of pride\u201d. \u201cNarcissism\u201d belongs to the \u201csymptom\u201d. The two attitudes of \u201cmoral dereliction\u201d (137) and \u201cpersonal self-deification\u201d (137) belong to the alternatives of \u00a0\u201clack of conscience\u201d and perhaps, \u201cfree will\u201d.<\/p>\n
