{"id":61,"date":"2012-12-16T01:02:13","date_gmt":"2012-12-16T01:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/75.103.96.165\/blog\/?p=61"},"modified":"2014-10-07T23:03:14","modified_gmt":"2014-10-07T23:03:14","slug":"thoughts-on-evolution-and-the-sin-in-eden-a-new-christian-synthesis-1998-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=61","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on Evolution and the Sin in Eden: A New Christian Synthesis (1998) 23"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The story of Pelagius and Augustine is full of intrigue.\u00a0 After the Council of Diospolis (415 AD) gave Pelagius the green light, the Council of Carthage (418) disputed its findings.\u00a0 Pope Zozimus issued his <em>Tractoria<\/em> (418) just as the curtain fell on the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven centuries later, at the Council of Trent, the question of Original Sin was raised.\u00a0 Gone were the old models of the human as <em>anima<\/em> joined to <em>caro<\/em> by <em>spiritus<\/em>.\u00a0 New models of the human were abounding.\u00a0 It is amazing that the Council did as well as it did.\u00a0 One of the two key canons of the Council of Carthage was presented. The other was disregarded.<\/p>\n<p>What amazes me in reading Zimmerman\u2019s end-of-life book is that his own work attempted the same turn as the Council of Trent.\u00a0 He looked at the Council of Trent in the same way that it looked at the Council of Carthage, knowing that some of it would keep and some of it would not.\u00a0 The last 450 years have been equivalent to 1100 years at the time of Trent.\u00a0 Yet, Zimmerman could not do the sorting.<\/p>\n<p>In a way, he did not have all the pieces of the puzzle of \u201cwhere he stood\u201d.\u00a0 By 1998, when he published, details of the evolutionary trajectory of the hominids were becoming irrefutable.\u00a0 When he published in 1998, it made sense that Adam \u2013 the first human \u2013 would have to be placed deep into the past, before the appearance of the first fossils of anatomically modern humans.\u00a0 \u00a0At this time, speech was regarded as one of <em>Homo sapiens<\/em>\u2019 species-specific traits.\u00a0 Evolutionary biologists considered the evolution of speech to be the same as the evolution of language (the biological capacity to talk).<\/p>\n<p>In this, Zimmerman has been joined by a number of Christians exploring the question of \u201cwho Adam and Eve might have been\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>I write in 2012.\u00a0 Details of the evolutionary trajectory of the hominids have not changed much.\u00a0 Our understanding of talk has.\u00a0 There has been a revolution in the field of semiotics.\u00a0 Much of that is due to Thomas Sebeok and John Deely.<\/p>\n<p>The evolution of talk differs from the evolution of language.\u00a0 \u201cAdam\u201d \u2013 the first human \u2013 can now be distinguished from \u201cAdam\u201d \u2013 the person in the Story of Adam and Eve.\u00a0 That is the premise of <em>An Archaeology of the Fall<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The story of Pelagius and Augustine is full of intrigue.\u00a0 After the Council of Diospolis (415 AD) gave Pelagius the green light, the Council of Carthage (418) disputed its findings.\u00a0 Pope Zozimus issued his Tractoria (418) just as the curtain fell on the Roman Empire.
