{"id":5902,"date":"2022-12-08T20:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-08T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=5902"},"modified":"2022-10-27T19:46:05","modified_gmt":"2022-10-27T19:46:05","slug":"a-primer-for-how-to-define-the-word-religion-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=5902","title":{"rendered":"\ufffcLooking at Razie Mah&#8217;s\u00a0\u00a0(2015) A Primer on Classical Political Philosophy\u00a0\u00a0(Part 19 of 24)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0124 The ninth primer concerns classical political philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What do classical philosophers talk about?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well for one (1), they ask people for their opinions and for two (2), they try to figure out&nbsp;<em>what is really going on,<\/em>concerning the topic of opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0125 The first (1) involves a strange game, concerning the difference between sensible and social constructions.&nbsp;&nbsp;Most people regard their opinions as sensible constructions, in the same way that they regard their spoken words as real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spoken word labels an artifact that validates the&#8230; um&#8230; spoken word.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, opinions are sensible in so far as artifacts validate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0126 That is where the second (2) comes on stage.&nbsp;&nbsp;What happens when artifacts no longer validate their words?&nbsp;&nbsp;Or, even more unsettling, what happens when the origin of opinions is social, rather than sensible construction?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where have I heard that idea before?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0127 Now, I want to discuss one small section of the ninth primer, in order to explore a referral from&nbsp;<em>classical political philosophy<\/em>&nbsp;back to&nbsp;<em>the distinction between sensible and social construction in the second primer<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0128 Here is&nbsp;<em>a general picture of social construction<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Slide39.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Slide39.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5903\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Slide39.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Slide39-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Figure 39<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0129 Note&nbsp;<em>the virtual nested form in the realm of actuality<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A perspective-level socially constructed reference<sub>2c<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;brings&nbsp;<em>the actuality of a bewildering experience<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;into relation with&nbsp;<em>a content-level originating reference<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I shorten this nested form into a coherent whole with the label, &#8220;a reference<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;constructed<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;on a reference<sub>2a<\/sub>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, the term, &#8220;constructed<sub>3b<\/sub>&#8220;, points to the failure of sensible construction and the triggering of social construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the entire label has the character of secondness, the realm of actuality, when social construction really has the character of thirdness, the realm of triadic relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unwittingly, my label changes categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0130 In the next blog, I will apply this pattern to one of my cherished opinions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wine is the nectar of the gods.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0124 The ninth primer concerns classical political philosophy.
