Psychiatry is an art.\u00a0 An analyst can be both right and wrong at the same time.\u00a0 Menninger was correct in presenting an incorrect interpretation.\u00a0 He \u201cheard\u201d a pattern in popular and intellectual discourse and guessed what it indicated.<\/p>\n
What was that pattern?\u00a0 The word \u201csin\u201d had disappeared in current \u201cprophetic\u201d discourse (such as the editorial page of the New Yorker).<\/p>\n
For example, Menninger described the horrible \u2013 over the top \u2013 village massacre by Lt. William Calley during the Vietnam War.\u00a0 None of the \u201cprophetic\u201d Progressives called it a \u201csin\u201d, even though they dramatically condemned the massacre.<\/p>\n
What did the disappearance indicate?<\/p>\n
Perhaps, the \u201cprophets\u201d forgot or misplaced their definitions of \u201csin\u201d.<\/p>\n
Menninger offered this definition: Sin is a transgression of the law of God; disobedience of the divine will; moral failure.\u00a0 Withdrawal, supererogation, and self-absorption are characteristics of \u201csin\u201d.\u00a0 Sin has many implications: guilt, answerability, responsibility, confession, attrition, reparation, repentance, forgiveness, atonement and many more.<\/p>\n
Many psychological \u201cscientists\u201d, such as Behavioralists and Psychiatrists, rejected the concept of \u201csin\u201d, plus all its implications, because the idea was not \u201cscientific\u201d.<\/p>\n
Perhaps, they rejected it for other reasons.<\/p>\n
