Menninger did not know this.\u00a0 However, as a psychoanalyst, he was trained to \u201clisten\u201d.\u00a0 He chastised members of his own discipline for \u201csins of omission\u201d (219), but that is the hazard of the profession.\u00a0 Psychotherapy is difficult because the analyst does not know how to \u201clabel\u201d what he is \u201chearing\u201d.\u00a0 Her interpretations must always be provisional.<\/p>\n
Ironically, Menninger\u2019s book came out precisely at the time when an answer to the \u201cmorality gap\u201d (that he identified) appeared within the Progressive consolidation itself.<\/p>\n
Menninger \u201cheard\u201d – with his \u201canalytical ears\u201d – that the word \u201csin\u201d was disappearing.\u00a0 This indicated that \u201csomething\u201d was missing (hence, \u201cthe morality gap\u201d).\u00a0 He did not realize that the \u201csomething\u201d was already being constructed, in various guises, without label.\u00a0 Twenty years later, the replacement to the word \u201csin\u201d was popularly referred to as \u201cpolitical incorrectness\u201d.<\/p>\n
