One observation described a (economic) bubble within a bubble that extended from 1945 to the time of writing (219).\u00a0 The bubble started in the discipline of Psychoanalysis.\u00a0\u00a0 Early on, many students tried to enter the field.\u00a0 There was plenty of opportunity.\u00a0 But not enough analysts could be trained to meet demand.\u00a0 Then, the \u201cpsychoanalyst\u201d bubble was swept into a larger bubble in the field of mental hygiene.\u00a0 Universities minted mental health \u201csub-professionals\u201d who found ready employment in various state institutions.<\/p>\n
A second observation portrayed the collapse of confidence at Princeton Theological Seminary.\u00a0 When Menninger spoke there, presenting his 1966 book The Crime of Punishment<\/em>, he found clergy students bewildered and disillusioned (224).\u00a0 They asked: Had they embarked on the right career?<\/p>\n Menninger did not link these two observations.<\/p>\n However, he suggested a role for the clergy in addressing a \u201cmorality gap\u201d (192) that could not be handled by psychoanalysts or mental care workers.\u00a0 This book was intended to inspire clergymen (and now, women) to address this \u201cmorality gap\u201d by recovering the Christian notion of \u201csin\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Menninger, a Freudian psychiatrist, wrote in America during the 1960s.\u00a0 Two of his observations are the subjects of these first few blogs.\u00a0 They set the stage for examining Menninger\u2019s book in greater depth.
