{"id":4885,"date":"2021-04-12T11:05:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-12T11:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=4885"},"modified":"2022-05-07T23:31:21","modified_gmt":"2022-05-07T23:31:21","slug":"looking-at-jeff-hardins-essay-2019-biology-and-theological-anthropology-part-10-of-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=4885","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Jeff Hardin&#8217;s Essay (2019) &#8220;Biology and Theological Anthropology&#8221; (Part 10 of 15)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0054 So far,&nbsp;<em>The Human Niche<\/em>&nbsp;covers&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>An Archaeology of the Fall<\/em>&nbsp;covers&nbsp;<em>the first singularity<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In both these exercises, theological and biological anthropology move together, without violating the Positivist&#8217;s construction of&nbsp;<em>what is<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What about&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The first singularity<\/em>&nbsp;initiates our current Lebenswelt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speech-alone talk spreads, through mimesis, to adjacent hand-speech talking cultures, on the basis of marginal differences of wealth and power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0055 Why is the Ubaid wealthier and more powerful than surrounding hand-speech talking cultures?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speech-alone talk works on symbols, while hand-speech relies on icons and indexes (even though language itself consists in two related systems of differences, that is, symbolic orders).&nbsp;&nbsp;Speech-alone talk can name parts, irrespective of wholes.&nbsp;&nbsp;In hand-speech talk, a part may name the whole.&nbsp;&nbsp;Consequently, speech-alone talk facilitates specialized languages, which supports labor and social specialization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ubaid has more wealth and power because it is further along&nbsp;<em>a path of labor and social specialization<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0056 But, isn&#8217;t there a problem with speech-alone words that is not present in hand-speech talk?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, in hand-speech talk,&nbsp;<em>the gesture-word<\/em>&nbsp;pictures or points to&nbsp;<em>its referent<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, of course, the word and referent go together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In speech-alone talk, we innately anticipate that a spoken word pictures or points to its referent.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, a speech act does not picture or point to anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We project meaning, presence and message into a spoken word.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then, we construct an artifact that serves as a referent and validates the projected meaning, presence and message.&nbsp;&nbsp;As long as the projection-validation works, the artifact is salient, and serves as a referent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0057 Perhaps, the reader sees a problem with this arrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed,&nbsp;<em>Augustine&#8217;s depiction of original sin<\/em>&nbsp;only scratches&nbsp;<em>the surface of the fallen character of our current Lebenswelt<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some Reformed traditions have a more precise term: total depravity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a person is able to construct an artifact that validates the meaning, presence and message that &#8220;he&#8221; projects onto a spoken word, then what is to stop &#8220;him&#8221; from um&#8230; creating and taking advantage of a situation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Welcome to our current Lebenswelt, where our own spoken words allow us to name our own &#8220;realities&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0058 Here is another pairing of Biblical interpretations and a new approach to the human sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/figure-08.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/figure-08.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4886\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/figure-08.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/figure-08-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0054 So far,&nbsp;The Human Niche&nbsp;covers&nbsp;the Lebenswelt that we evolved in.
