Science is successfully born at the start of the modern age,<\/em> with the formulation of the Positivist’s judgment<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is a judgment?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judgment is a relation<\/em> between ‘what is’<\/em> and ‘what ought to be’<\/em>.  When the elements are assigned to Peirce’s categories, the judgment becomes actionable.  Actionable judgments unfold into category-based nested forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0010 The positivist intellect, the relation<\/em>, insists on a rule: No metaphysics.  Surely, this is one reason why scientific inquiry into human evolution grates against theological anthropology.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What ought to be<\/em> is an empirio-schematic judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disciplinary language (relation<\/em>) brings observations and measurements (what is<\/em>) into relation with mathematical and mechanical models (what ought to be<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0011 What is what is?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is<\/em> has the structure of Peirce’s secondness.  The category of secondness is the realm of actuality.  Secondness consists of two contiguous real elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, the two real elements,\u00a0a noumenon<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0its phenomena<\/em>, belong to firstness, the realm of potential.\u00a0\u00a0The noumenon<\/em>,\u00a0the thing itself<\/em>, has\u00a0the potential of capturing the attention of the positivist intellect<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0Its<\/em>\u00a0phenomena<\/em>, observable and measurable facets of the thing, have\u00a0the potential of activating an empirio-schematic judgment<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
