Dwight Longenecker&#8217;s Podcast (2020) &#8220;Myths, Monsters and Mysteries&#8221; (Part 4)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0022 When Father Longenecker begins his discussion of myth.&nbsp;&nbsp;It seems that he is discussing Jungian psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jungian psychology investigates&nbsp;<em>the way that the mind works<\/em>, especially in regards to&nbsp;<em>the so-called &#8220;collective unconscious&#8221;,&nbsp;&nbsp;mental habits common across civilizations<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This corresponds to&nbsp;<em>essence<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Essence<\/em>&nbsp;contributes to&nbsp;<em>the realness of the story<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0023 However, there is&nbsp;<em>the complement to essence, esse_ce,<\/em>&nbsp;that is discovered through&nbsp;<em>independent inquiry<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;One could label this inquiry, &#8220;science&#8221;, but the modern term means&nbsp;<em>building mathematical and mechanical models<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The premodern term for &#8220;science&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>&#8220;natural philosophy&#8221;<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Natural philosophy seeks out a thing or process or event, tries to explain it, and reaches understanding of&nbsp;<em>the thing itself<\/em>, not&nbsp;<em>the observable and measurable facets of the thing<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The thing itself<\/em>&nbsp;has&nbsp;<em>a hylomorphic structure<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0024&nbsp;&nbsp;So, an independent inquiry, having great compatibility with natural philosophy, may try to figure out&nbsp;<em>the real event that hides within and gives rise to myth<sub>2<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The discovery of the event is prophetic, since it cannot be predicted by examining the story itself.&nbsp;&nbsp;Only after the discovery of the event, does the myth become more that pure essence (fantasy).&nbsp;&nbsp;The story gains esse_ce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Esse_ce<\/em>&nbsp;contributes to&nbsp;<em>the realness of the myth<\/em>&nbsp;in ways that essence does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0025 Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/longenecker-008.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4748\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/longenecker-008.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/longenecker-008-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>Figure 08<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0022 When Father Longenecker begins his discussion of myth.&nbsp;&nbsp;It seems that he is discussing Jungian psychology.
