Its real origin hides within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0016 A myth does not seem like a thing.&nbsp;&nbsp;A pearl does. A pearl serves as a metaphor for myth.&nbsp;&nbsp;If it were not for science, we would not know that&nbsp;<em>a grain of sand<\/em>&nbsp;gives rise to a pearl inside&nbsp;<em>the maw of an oyster<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This implies that&nbsp;<em>the real world event<\/em>&nbsp;may be known from other inquiries, not from the story itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/longenecker-006.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4744\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/longenecker-006.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/longenecker-006-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>Figure 06<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0017 Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphism applies to things.&nbsp;&nbsp;A pearl is a thing.&nbsp;&nbsp;A thing has two real elements,&nbsp;<em>matter<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>form<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Matter has two facets.&nbsp;&nbsp;If material, matter is called &#8220;matter&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;If immaterial, matter is called &#8220;being&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;Being is relational.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Latin word for being is &#8220;ens&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I label the contiguity between matter and form with the word, &#8220;substance&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;The term, &#8220;substance&#8221;, has quite a history.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, it should be fine if a thing is&nbsp;<em>matter [substance] form<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Note how the contiguity could just as well be a verb, &#8220;substantiates&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0018 Now, many of us have heard the term, &#8220;essence&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp;Essence is all about form.&nbsp;&nbsp;Indeed, I suspect that essence captures one facet of Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is another, less well known, scholastic term, &#8220;<em>esse<\/em>&#8220;.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Esse<\/em>&nbsp;is Latin for&nbsp;<em>being as existent<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;I will now make up a word,&nbsp;<em>esse_ce<\/em>, which is&nbsp;<em>a complement to essence<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Esse_ce<\/em>&nbsp;captures&nbsp;<em>the other facet of Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphism<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0019 Here is a picture of the myth, with esse_ce and essence denoted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/longenecker-007.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4745\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/longenecker-007.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/longenecker-007-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>Figure 07<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0020 Ah, in myth, both esse_ce and essence share&nbsp;<em>the contiguity between a real event and its story<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isn&#8217;t that curious?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even more, I can extend this pattern to the pearl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The esse_ce of a pearl<\/em>&nbsp;contains&nbsp;<em>a grain of sand<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The essence of a pearl<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>a translucent spherical form<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0021 A pearl serves as a metaphor for myth.I have come full circle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0013 Now, I travel in a little circle, turning around Peirce&#8217;s secondness and Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphism.&nbsp;&nbsp;One is postmodern.&nbsp;&nbsp;The other is premodern. 0014 Myth is a hylomorphism, which may be depicted as follows in the style of Peirce&#8217;s secondness. 0015 Peirce&#8217;s secondness is one of three categories.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is the realm of actuality.&nbsp;&nbsp;Secondness consists in two contiguous real [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[10,58],"tags":[62,39,63,55,88,93,89,90,91,34],"class_list":["post-4742","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-defining-religion","category-hylomorphism-and-secondness","tag-aristotle","tag-category-based-nested-form","tag-hylomorphism","tag-interscope","tag-jung","tag-longenecker","tag-monsters","tag-mysteries","tag-myth","tag-peirce"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Comments on Fr.
