(Part 5)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Ramifications<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0065 Armand Maurer offers an essay that traces the notion of secondary causes from Darwin, back through Suarez and Aquinas, all the way to the Neoplatonic Book of Causes.&nbsp;&nbsp;He aims to show that God\u2019s greatness is not diminished by NeoDarwinian theory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, the working comparison shows that the normal contexts of Divine Will<sub>3<\/sub>, natural selection<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;and body development<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;cannot exclude one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0066 This is not the view of the modern Zeitgeist, which declares that, in order for inquiry to be scientific, inquiry must exclude metaphysics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0067 Darwin does not rise above the modern Zeitgeist.&nbsp;&nbsp;Nor can a reader expect him to.&nbsp;&nbsp;After all, the Zeitgeist fills the air that we breathe.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Zeitgeist stands between heaven and earth.&nbsp;&nbsp;There is no avoiding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first, Darwin thinks that the concept of secondary causes provides a path to the acceptance of his theory.&nbsp;&nbsp;Unfortunately, this path is already blocked by the modern Zeitgeist.&nbsp;&nbsp;Later in life, Darwin declares himself agnostic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0068 Now, I may ask, \u201cWhat happens next?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens in Western Civilization between 7660 and 7820 U0\u2019?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Darwin is on target about secondary causation, and if the modern Zeitgeist denies the possibility, then what happens when&nbsp;<em>the esse of the thing [has power to cause] results<sub>2<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;is no longer contextualized by the primary cause?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if the Divine Will<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;and the Divine Presence<sub>1<\/sub>&nbsp;are systematically ignored, even ridiculed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0069 Nature abhors a vacuum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The positivist intellect rules out metaphysics in scientific inquiry, setting up a scenario where natural selection<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;and body development<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;exclude the Divine Will<sub>3<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Christians do not understand how to counter, because any attempt to respond meets the charge that the Christian is not scientific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This leaves an opening for a new metaphysic, one that declares itself to be \u201cnot religious\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0070 Does \u201cnot religious\u201d mean the same as scientific?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many moderns think so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, how can a modernist distinguish between science and&#8230; er&#8230; a religious movement that says that it is \u201cnot religious\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(See comments on Pennock\u2019s eEssay on the distinction of science and religion, appearing at the end of June 2020)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social Darwinism of the late 76<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;and early 77<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century serve as an example.&nbsp;&nbsp;According to their dogma, humans inherit a social phenotype and are bound to certain civilizational adaptations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karl Marx, for example, envisions six stages, primitive barbaric communist, the slave, the feudal, the capitalist, the socialist and the communist.&nbsp;&nbsp;Social phenotypes differ for each one.&nbsp;&nbsp;For example, for feudalism, the two social phenotypes are&nbsp;<em>the landowner<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the serf<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Marxist myth, civilization progresses from one stage to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each stage requires a different type of leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The esse of a leader<\/em>&nbsp;includes&nbsp;<em>the power to achieve adaptive organizational objectives<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0071 This calls to mind the master-work,&nbsp;<em>How To Define the Word, \u201cReligion\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is&nbsp;<em>the potential<sub>1aC<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;<em>underlying the actuality of an organizational objective<sub>2aC<\/sub>?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Righteousness<sub>1aC<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Social Darwinism, that righteousness<sub>1aC<\/sub>&nbsp;is \u201cnot religious\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0072 Marxism becomes a brand of Social Darwinism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a general picture for the modern Zeitgeist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Maurer-14.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4701\"\/><figcaption>Figure 14<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0073 A vacuum is apparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Both modern intellectuals and the leader<\/em>&nbsp;offer to fill in the blanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0074 Notably,&nbsp;<em>the genetic basis of inheritance<\/em>&nbsp;is not well understood during&nbsp;<em>the century after Darwin<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mendel starts his experiments in 7653 U0\u2019.&nbsp;&nbsp;James Watson and Francis Crick determine that the structure of DNA is a double helical polymer in 7753.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, what I call \u201cbody development<sub>3b<\/sub>\u201d, \u201cthe phenotype<sub>2b<\/sub>\u201d and \u201cgenotype<sub>1b<\/sub>\u201d are more mystically configured by Social Darwinists.&nbsp;&nbsp;They are conceived as social development<sub>3b<\/sub>, cultural phenotype<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;and identity<sub>1b<\/sub>. These terms appeal to folk psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of this, even in very late Modernism, both intellectuals and leaders insist that human evolution is solely due to material and instrumental causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one thinks that immaterial causes are relevant.&nbsp;&nbsp;This error is refuted in the master-work,&nbsp;<em>The Human Niche<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, no one imagines a discontinuity between&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This topic is addressed in the master-work,&nbsp;<em>An Archaeology of the Fall<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0072 What is primary causation in&nbsp;<em>modern movements that proclaim themselves to be \u201cnot religious\u201d?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different modern schools fill in the blanks in their own ways.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mercantilism, Fascism, Communism and Big Government (il)Liberalism each has its day.&nbsp;&nbsp;They each proclaim a different primary cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maritain sees this.&nbsp;&nbsp;He lives to a ripe old age.&nbsp;&nbsp;He writes his essay on evolution, close to the end.&nbsp;&nbsp;He may not know&nbsp;<em>how to put his vision into a precise, scientifically plausible, argument<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;He does know that the issue must be addressed, not by positivist intellects, but by rational intellects.&nbsp;&nbsp;Secondary causation must no longer be usurped by human agency.&nbsp;&nbsp;The slots for primary causation cannot remain empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0073 NeoDarwinism must be seen as an expression of secondary causation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not the purpose of Maurer\u2019s essay to show how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose is to show&nbsp;<em>what must be done<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0074 The&nbsp;<em>Book of Causes<\/em>&nbsp;is translated into Arabic, by a Neoplatonic philosopher, living near Baghdad, shortly after al Ma\u2019mun fails once and fails again, to reconcile Muslims, first, with one another, and second, with the rational intellect.&nbsp;&nbsp;Who would imagine that, a thousand years later, Charles Darwin would pick one of its key ideas, secondary causation, in order to justify his own scientific proposal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The popularization of the idea<\/em>&nbsp;comes through Aquinas, then Suarez.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The realization of the necessity of the idea<\/em>\u00a0comes through Maritain, and here, Maurer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this,\u00a0<em>the beauty of this essay<\/em>\u00a0excels.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ramifications 0065 Armand Maurer offers an essay that traces the notion of secondary causes from Darwin, back through Suarez and Aquinas, all the way to the Neoplatonic Book of Causes.&nbsp;&nbsp;He aims to show that God\u2019s greatness is not diminished by NeoDarwinian theory.
