Second, a small boat, initially named The Creation Science,<\/em> then later (after the unfortunate moment when the captain lost a leg to stand on) named The Intelligent Design<\/em>, floats on the surface, that is, the bottom, of this inverted ocean. This boat hunts the above-mentioned leviathan. The academically inclined sailors<\/em> fashion a lance of that looks like the methodological level of science<\/em>. But, the captain does not fully comprehend what harm it can do<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The captain?<\/p>\n\n\n\n 0024 Philosopher Larry Laudan comes under scrutiny in the fourth section of Pennock\u2019s essay. After the McLean case (the leg-bite), this philosopher writes three articles denying a demarcation between science and religion. There are no criteria for strictly distinguishing what is religious<\/em>, what is scientific<\/em>, what is pseudo-scientific<\/em> and what is unscientific<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Laudan struggles mightily against the criteria of Michael Ruse<\/em> (A-E).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two arguments support his conclusions (M and N).<\/p>\n\n\n\n The first (M) says, more or less, \u201cThere is a lack of unity between philosophers about the demarcation criteria.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Okay, experts rarely agree. That is the nature of experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The second (N) says, more or less, \u201cThe 1981 McLean versus Arkansas case<\/em> is hollow, because it canonizes a false stereotype of what science is<\/em> and how it works<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n I suspect that this is correct because Ruse\u2019s criteria (A-E) pertain to what is<\/em> and what ought to be<\/em> in the Naturalist\u2019s judgment. The empirio-schematic judgment (what ought to be<\/em>) unfolds into the content level of the following two-level interscope. The Naturalist\u2019s judgment unfolds into the situation level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 0025 Michael Ruse\u2019s criteria (A-E) draw attention to the content level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps, this is why the author, Robert Pennock, wants to set the record straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The 1981 McLean<\/em> case focuses on the content of science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The 2005 Kitzmiller<\/em> case focuses on the situation of science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What does this suggest?<\/p>\n\n\n\n 0025 The Intelligent Design<\/em> comes up with a better tactic. Of Pandas and People<\/em> follows the style of the empirio-schematic judgment. <\/em> Ruse\u2019s criteria lack teeth.Pennock sees this and proposes that science must be distinguished, not on the methodological levela<\/sub>, but on the naturalism levelb<\/sub>.
