Stump\u2019s Article (2020) \u201cDid God Guide Our Evolution?\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0001 These comments are offered on my blog as a sample of the character of works that are available for sale at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smashwords.com\/\">www.smashwords.com<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;They seem rather dry and technical.&nbsp;&nbsp;Nevertheless, they offer an innovative postmodern approach that should interest enterprising students and scholars.&nbsp;&nbsp;Here, the category-based nested form and the two-level interscope come into play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These categorical structures are introduced in&nbsp;<em>A Primer on the Category-Based Nested Form<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>A Primer on Sensible and Social Construction<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0002 J.B. Stump offers his views in the March issue of&nbsp;<em>Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith<\/em>&nbsp;(volume 72(1), pages 15-24).&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Perspectives<\/em>&nbsp;is the flagship publication of the&nbsp;<em>American Scientific Affiliation<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Stump\u2019s article may be available for download at their website.&nbsp;&nbsp;If not, please request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stump addresses the question, \u201cDid God guide our evolution?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He reviews several broad ways to answer, then discusses his favorite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0003 So, does God guide our creation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What about the scientific description of human evolution?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These questions point in different directions, C2 and C1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second direction (C2) is that God intentionally creates human beings in His image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first direction (C1) claims that evolution is the best scientific explanation for the origin of our species,&nbsp;<em>Homo sapiens<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0004 These two claims can both be formulated as category-based nested forms (CBNF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CBNF contains four expressions.&nbsp;&nbsp;The fourth is paradigmatic.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>A normal context<sub>3<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;brings&nbsp;<em>an actuality<sub>2<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;into relation with&nbsp;<em>the possibility of \u2018something\u2019<sub>1<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The subscripts refer to Peirce\u2019s categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0005 Now, I associate features in each direction to the CBNF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The normal context<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;for C1 is science<sub>3<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The normal context<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;for C2 is the Genesis portrayal of God\u2019s work<sub>3<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actuality<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;for C1 is human evolution<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;and for C2 is the Genesis creation of humans<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The potential<sub>1<\/sub>&nbsp;for C1 is \u2018natural selection and genetics\u2019<sub>1<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The potential<sub>1<\/sub>&nbsp;for C2 is \u2018the picture of humans as images of God\u2019<sub>1<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0006 Here is how that looks in technical notation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0007 So, did God guide our evolution?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Stump,&nbsp;<em>the first strategy&nbsp;<\/em>(A1)<em>&nbsp;for answering the question<\/em>&nbsp;relies on semantics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I ask, \u201cWhat problem does semantics solve?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, I see two nested forms.&nbsp;&nbsp;How do they interact?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0008 Normal contexts follow the logic of exclusion, alignment and complement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they exhibit the logic of exclusion, the nested forms come into conflict.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s God\u2019s work<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;or science work<sub>3<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is either one or the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the logic is complement, then one could end up with Steven Gould\u2019s idea of \u201cnon-overlapping magisteria\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is not much of a complement.&nbsp;&nbsp;Perhaps, a truce is a better description.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they exhibit the logic of alignment, then one nested form virtually emerges from (and situates) the other.&nbsp;&nbsp;This structural relation is called a \u201ctwo-level interscope\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;The two levels are content<sub>a<\/sub>&nbsp;and situation<sub>b<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Content<sub>a<\/sub>&nbsp;goes with Peirce\u2019s category of firstness (the realm of possibility).&nbsp;&nbsp;Situation<sub>b<\/sub>&nbsp;associates with Peirce\u2019s category of secondness (the realm of actuality).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two-level interscope has two flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the upward flow, content<sub>a<\/sub>&nbsp;underlies situation<sub>b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the downward flow, situation<sub>b<\/sub>&nbsp;orders content<sub>a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0009 So, I have two statements (C2 and C1) and two levels.&nbsp;&nbsp;Which goes with which?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is where semantics comes into play.&nbsp;&nbsp;Semantics is about language.&nbsp;&nbsp;When I talk about science, my words are usually content-oriented.&nbsp;&nbsp;When I think about God\u2019s creation, I am contemplating my own (and everyone else\u2019s) situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is another, more technical semantic argument.&nbsp;&nbsp;The religious statement (C2) cannot be situated by the science statement (C1), because the Positivist\u2019s judgment rules out metaphysics.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Positivist\u2019s judgment is developed in&nbsp;<em>Comments on Jacques Maritain\u2019s Book (1935) Natural Philosophy<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;I cannot help but smile at this application.&nbsp;&nbsp;From a semantic point of view, how could science situate a nested form that it cannot consider?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture of the semantic-ordered, two-level interscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" strategy (A2).&nbsp;&nbsp;The nomological strategy suggests that the laws of human evolution are not well understood.&nbsp;&nbsp;The laws of evolution may be, but there is something wrong with their application to human evolution.&nbsp;&nbsp;Stumps reviews some critical arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0011&nbsp;<em>The two-level interscope pictured above<\/em>&nbsp;endorses the \u201cyes, but\u201d character of the nomological approach, addressing the question, \u201cDid God guide human evolution?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If science is so smart, then it should situate the religious nested form, rather than the other way around.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The fact that the Positivist judgment excludes metaphysics<\/em>&nbsp;indicates that science can understand human evolution only in terms of material and instrumental causalities.&nbsp;&nbsp;However, I personally situate the evolution of my species in terms of my religious sensibility, which involves immaterial causalities, such as final attributes and formal design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does this imply?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The ultimate human niche<\/em>&nbsp;is not material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, this is the central thesis of the masterwork,&nbsp;<em>The Human Niche<\/em>, available at www.smashwords.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0012 The semantic (A1) strategy may be adjusted by the nomological (A2), producing something like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" the third answer, the causal joint strategy (A3), comes into play.&nbsp;&nbsp;The causal joint strategy suggests that God does not obviously intervene in human evolution, but God nevertheless creates.&nbsp;&nbsp;The question is, \u201cHow?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;Stump considers several authors with very curious answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0014 These answers have something in common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They exploit the dynamics of the two-level interscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The divine situation<sub>b<\/sub>&nbsp;guides the science content<sub>a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scientific content<sub>a<\/sub>&nbsp;underlies divine subtle intervention<sub>b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSubtle\u201d means \u201cbelow the threshold of detection\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0015 How could this happen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I only need to substitute God\u2019s Will<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;for the situation-level actuality<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;and God\u2019s Presence<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;for the work<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>what is happening<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subtle guidance underlies the Anthropic Principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>God\u2019s Presence<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;associates to&nbsp;<em>the potential of humans (including me) being created in the image of God<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0017 How does God\u2019s Presence<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;manifest?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God\u2019s Presence<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;is the potential underlying God\u2019s will<sub>3b<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Also, it<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;stands in the slot 1b, which is&nbsp;<em>the potential<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;of situating the content level actuality<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This associates&nbsp;<em>God\u2019s Presence<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;with&nbsp;<em>the potential of situating human evolution<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This potential to situate<\/em>&nbsp;operates according to joint causes, in the realm of possibility<sub>1<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>God\u2019s Presence<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;virtually situates (and is emergent to)&nbsp;<em>the potential of \u2018natural selection and genetics\u2019<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The word, \u201cvirtual\u201d, means \u201cin virtue\u201d (rather than the modern use, \u201cin simulation\u201d).&nbsp;&nbsp;The term, \u201cin virtue\u201d, goes with final attributes and formal design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, while&nbsp;<em>the stuff of Neodarwinism<\/em>&nbsp;may be scientifically regarded according to material and instrumental causes,&nbsp;<em>the virtue of God\u2019s Presence<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;cannot be fully ignored in either the adaptation<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;or the phenotype<sub>1a<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is the central point of the joint causal (A3) answer.&nbsp;&nbsp;Biologists cannot avoid joint causality when they discuss adaptation or phenotype.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many modern biologists label&nbsp;<em>God\u2019s Presence<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>, \u201cchance<sub>1b<\/sub>\u201d or \u201crandom<sub>1b<\/sub>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0018 In sum, divine subtle intervention operates in the realms of normal context<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;and potential<sub>1<\/sub>, as pictured above.&nbsp;&nbsp;Neither of these can be scientifically observed or measured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0019 The pertinence of the joint causal (A3) semantic (A1) approach does not stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adaptations<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;and phenotypes<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;are actualities that have&nbsp;<em>the potential<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;of underlying human evolution<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means that adaptations<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;and phenotypes<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;are actualities with their own nested forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One can imagine that God directly intervenes in either nested form by manipulating its underlying potential.&nbsp;&nbsp;Such intervention avoids detection because the actualities, adaptation<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;and phenotype<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;refer to the same biological entity<sub>2<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;In other words, two actualities<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;constitute a single entity<sub>2<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Therefore, the two actualities<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;are confounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0020 Let me develop this scenario in a little more detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neodarwinism<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;consists in two independent nested forms, as noted in&nbsp;<em>Comments on Dennis Venema and Scot McKnight\u2019s Book (2017) Adam and the Genome<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;These nested forms belong to the situation-level of a two-level interscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one, natural selection<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;brings adaptation<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;into relation with a niche<sub>1b<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The niche<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the potential<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;of situating an actuality independent of the adapting species<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the other, body development<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;brings phenotype<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;into relation with genotype<sub>1b<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The genotype<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the potential<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;of situating DNA<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the joint causal answer, God could directly manipulate either&nbsp;<em>an actuality independent of the adapting species<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>, the foundation of the niche<sub>1b<\/sub>, or&nbsp;<em>DNA<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>, the foundation of the genotype<sub>1b<\/sub>, without detection.&nbsp;&nbsp;Why?&nbsp;&nbsp;A change in one can mask a change in the other.&nbsp;&nbsp;They are confounders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0021 Here is a picture of these independent category-based nested forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image requires its own normal context<sub>3<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;However, adaptation<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;and phenotype<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;pertain to a single actuality<sub>2<\/sub>, the biological entity, in this case, the human being<sub>2<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The human being is&nbsp;<em>the intersection of adaptation<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;and phenotype<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the chapter on presence in&nbsp;<em>How to Define the Word \u201cReligion\u201d<\/em>, intersections are mysterious.&nbsp;&nbsp;They contain&nbsp;<em>contrasting features that cannot be resolved through the logic of noncontradiction<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Biologists present distorted views when they claim that evolution consists in either natural selection or DNA-based body development.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The intersection of these two nested forms<\/em>&nbsp;codifies&nbsp;<em>what biologists are really trying to say<\/em>, but fail, because of preferences for either natural history or genetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0023 So, the joint causal answer suggests that, even if God directly manipulates the actualities underlying the niche<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;or the genotype<sub>1b<\/sub>, scientists could never detect the intervention, because the evolved biological entity<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;is an intersection, filled with contradictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is how that epistemological strategy highlights the contrast between science work<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;and God\u2019s work<sub>3b<\/sub>, while simultaneously asserting that they cannot be divorced.&nbsp;&nbsp;I am a product of human evolution<sub>2a<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;I am created in the image of God<sub>2b<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Science work<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>what is happening<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>. God\u2019s work<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>what this means to me<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture of that strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/E7-stump.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/E7-stump.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/E7-stump-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>Figure 7<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0025 Now, I address the elephant in Stump\u2019s room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I do so in a roundabout way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I start with a question about the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0026 Does God guide human evolution?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is the difference between this question and&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did God guide human evolution?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0026 One strategy to answer this question is semantic (A1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Human evolution is in our past.&nbsp;&nbsp;Are we no longer are evolving?&nbsp;&nbsp;It sure seems that we aren\u2019t.&nbsp;&nbsp;In fact, who knows&nbsp;<em>what we are doing<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0027 What does this imply?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nomological strategy (A2) comes to bat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Homo sapiens<\/em>&nbsp;comes into existence, and lives for some time, in&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, we are no longer in&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore,&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt<\/em>&nbsp;is not&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I conclude that&nbsp;<em>a transition from one Lebenswelt to the other<\/em>&nbsp;is missing in&nbsp;<em>current accounts of human evolution<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This missing element is hypothesized in&nbsp;<em>The First Singularity and Its Fairy Tale Trace<\/em>&nbsp;and reflected upon in&nbsp;<em>Comments on Original Sin and Original Death: Romans 5:12-19<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This transition is dramatized in&nbsp;<em>An Archaeology of the Fall<\/em>, available on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smashwords.com\/\">www.smashwords.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0028 With this said, the joint causal strategy (A3) cannot be ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If (as proposed in&nbsp;<em>The Human Niche<\/em>), humans adapt into&nbsp;<em>the niche of immaterial triadic relations<\/em>&nbsp;(such as&nbsp;<em>the category-based nested form<\/em>), then God\u2019s work<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;virtually situates nature\u2019s operations, as understood by science<sub>3a<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;In our evolution, the material world enters into&nbsp;<em>an evolving awareness of immaterial triadic relations<\/em>, without compromising its instrumental and material causalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0029 On top of that, the epistemological strategy (A4) says that God\u2019s work<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;and science work<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;cannot be divorced, in the same way that&nbsp;<em>what this means to me<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;cannot be divorced from&nbsp;<em>what is happening<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0030 So obviously, the elephant in the room is concordism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did God guide human evolution?&nbsp;&nbsp;How does God guide us today?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These questions aim to harmonize scientific formulations and Biblical revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stump is on target.&nbsp;&nbsp;Four different strategies apply.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, the target is so much larger than he realizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example,&nbsp;<em>Comments on Christy Hemphill\u2019s Essay (2019) \u201cAll in a Week\u2019s Work\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;introduces a harmony between cognitive psychology and metaphors within Genesis 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The concord between humans created in the image of God<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>human evolution<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;will prove to be multi-faceted, addressing&nbsp;<em>who we are<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;<em>who we evolved to be<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0031 My thanks to J.B.
