{"id":446,"date":"2013-06-07T03:18:24","date_gmt":"2013-06-07T03:18:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/75.103.96.165\/blog\/?p=446"},"modified":"2014-10-07T23:02:22","modified_gmt":"2014-10-07T23:02:22","slug":"thoughts-on-sin-by-ted-peters-1994-self-justification-6o","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=446","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on Sin by Ted Peters (1994) Self-Justification 6O"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scapegoating is another sign of justification<sup>self<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Peters discussed the ideas of Rene Girard in this regard.<\/p>\n<p>Girard\u2019s <em>Violence and the Sacred<\/em> was published in 1977, 17 years before Peters book and 35 years before this blog entry.\u00a0 Girard may be an important figure when it comes to understanding the nature of sin, so the next few blogs are devoted to Peters\u2019 treatment of him.<\/p>\n<p>Peters framed Girard\u2019s ideas in this fashion:\u00a0 Some regnant values in every society are concerned with preserving the peace and maintaining \u201csocial\u201d order.\u00a0 At the same time, concupiscence expresses a secret desire to steal the livelihood of others.\u00a0 After all, cursing, ideology and hypocrisy all aim to steal the livelihood of others by permitting fear and loathing, self-serving \u201crighteous\u201d action, and crass deception.<\/p>\n<p>In order to reconcile these two points, societies adopt a rhetoric of \u201csacrifice\u201d (which sets the stage for \u201cscapegoating\u201d).\u00a0 Sacrifice-scapegoating establishes \u201csocial\u201d order.\u00a0 Sacrifice-scapegoating suspends the tide of violence that concupiscence unleashes.\u00a0 It does so by stealing the life of another, where the victim\u2019s life serves as a substitute for the guilty one\u2019s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scapegoating is another sign of justificationself.
