{"id":426,"date":"2013-05-24T03:10:06","date_gmt":"2013-05-24T03:10:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/75.103.96.165\/blog\/?p=426"},"modified":"2014-10-07T23:02:22","modified_gmt":"2014-10-07T23:02:22","slug":"thoughts-on-sin-by-ted-peters-1994-self-justification-6e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=426","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on Sin by Ted Peters (1994) Self-Justification 6E"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How does the idea that the serpent is \u201ca reified projection of Eve\u2019s unconscious thoughts\u201d play out in the Genesis text?<\/p>\n<p>The idea that the serpent is an independent being comes in the introduction, where the serpent is described as the \u201cmost wily creature that the Lord God had made\u201d.\u00a0 But, this description also fits the modern psychoanalytic concept of the \u201cunconscious\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The serpent first speaks in an \u201congoing conversation\u201d.\u00a0 Who else was Eve talking to?\u00a0 Adam only is later mentioned.\u00a0 She was talking to herself.<\/p>\n<p>The serpent validated Eve\u2019s \u201cunconscious suspicions\u201d. Then Eve converted the serpent\u2019s comments to justification<sup>self<\/sup>s.<\/p>\n<p>None of these contradict the idea that the serpent could be the reified projection of Eve\u2019s unconscious thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>After Eve ate.\u00a0 The serpent no longer spoke.<\/p>\n<p>When the Divine Presence arrived and guessed what is going on, Eve blamed the serpent in the same way that we would blame our own justification<sup>self<\/sup>s.\u00a0 \u201cThe serpent beguiled me.\u201d sounds very much like \u201cWell, I thought that\u201d followed by justification<sup>self<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Then the Divine Presence addressed the serpent directly.\u00a0 In doing so, (in this speculative interpretation), the Divine Presence acted as if \u201cthe reified projection of Eve\u2019s unconscious thoughts\u201d were an independent entity.<\/p>\n<p>Eve\u2019s pretense that the serpent beguiled her was enough for the Divine Presence.\u00a0 Sure, she was guilty and would be punished (with a description of how Neolithic and Paleolithic women lived outside of Eden), but she was not going to be held responsible for that reified justification<sup>self<\/sup>.\u00a0 The serpent was on its own.<\/p>\n<p>Does that not sound like \u201cthe remission of sins\u201d?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How does the idea that the serpent is \u201ca reified projection of Eve\u2019s unconscious thoughts\u201d play out in the Genesis text?
