{"id":42,"date":"2012-12-07T01:00:42","date_gmt":"2012-12-07T01:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/75.103.96.165\/blog\/?p=42"},"modified":"2014-10-07T23:03:14","modified_gmt":"2014-10-07T23:03:14","slug":"thoughts-on-evolution-and-the-sin-in-eden-a-new-christian-synthesis-1998-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=42","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on Evolution and the Sin in Eden: A New Christian Synthesis (1998) 14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>An Archeaology of the Fall<\/em> never uses the words \u201cOriginal Sin\u201d, at least not intentionally.\u00a0\u00a0 Instead, the last half of the novel labors to show that the image of the semiotic transition from hand-speech talk to speech-alone talk parallels the image of the mythic transition inherent in the text of Genesis 2:4 on.\u00a0 The parallels are evocative and work both ways.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the image of the serpent coming into existence as a projection of Eve\u2019s own doubt (gelling, as it were, with a spiritual being) does not have a corresponding image in the semiotic transition.\u00a0 Perhaps it should.<\/p>\n<p>In a similar fashion, Zimmerman\u2019s section on the \u201csin of the world\u201d that thwarts God\u2019s plan and is an unbroken continuation of the transgression of Adam and Eve has a corresponding image in regards to the semiotic transition in <em>An Archaeology \u2026<\/em>, but one that is not developed as much as it could be developed.\u00a0 We are all swimming in seas of symbolic orders.\u00a0 All these symbolic orders are \u2013 to some degree \u2013 exclusive.\u00a0 How do we describe our fractured treading?\u00a0 How do we describe the individual\u2019s and the institution\u2019s perspectives?<\/p>\n<p>Reading Chapter 11 of Zimmerman\u2019s work (on the propagation of Original Sin), with <em>An Archaeology of the Fall<\/em> in mind, leaves me with the impression that Christians may be on the verge of discovering that the long-held traditional idea that \u201cBaptism washes away Original Sin\u201d contains insights never before imagined.\u00a0 Pieces of a mosaic will suddenly fall into place.<\/p>\n<p>Baptism is all about opportunity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Archeaology of the Fall never uses the words \u201cOriginal Sin\u201d, at least not intentionally.\u00a0\u00a0 Instead, the last half of the novel labors to show that the image of the semiotic transition from hand-speech talk to speech-alone talk parallels the image of the mythic transition inherent in the text of Genesis 2:4 on.\u00a0 The parallels [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-42","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-the-science-of-original-sin"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
