{"id":408,"date":"2013-05-14T02:17:17","date_gmt":"2013-05-14T02:17:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/75.103.96.165\/blog\/?p=408"},"modified":"2014-10-07T23:02:23","modified_gmt":"2014-10-07T23:02:23","slug":"thoughts-on-sin-by-ted-peters-1994-concupiscence-5h","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=408","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on Sin by Ted Peters (1994) Concupiscence 5H"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cConcupiscence\u201d is saying \u201cyes\u201d when we should have said \u201cno\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>To some, that sounds like \u201caddiction\u201d.\u00a0 To others, it is the way they live.\u00a0 To still others, it\u2019s the way \u201cthe one they love\u201d lives.<\/p>\n<p>Peters discussed this in the section \u201caddiction and grace\u201d.\u00a0 In addiction, our bodies become attuned to the finite end that pretends to be a transcendent end.\u00a0 Whatever it is, we need it.\u00a0 And always, we need more and more as the body adapts.\u00a0 The same goes for the soul.\u00a0 The only feature that is different is the nature of the finite end.<\/p>\n<p>St. Augustine was once addicted to sex.\u00a0 He knew the yearning.\u00a0 No doubt, his youthful Manichean machismo was seductive and led to his ruin (that is, his becoming a Christian philosopher.\u00a0 Think of it from the Manichean perspective.).\u00a0 His former addiction of the body gave him insight into recognizing Pelagius\u2019 addiction of the soul.<\/p>\n<p>Pelagius was addicted to \u201cbeing regarded as perfect\u201d.\u00a0 What British monk wouldn\u2019t be, given enough adoration?\u00a0 Pelagius was a \u201ccelebrity\u201d.\u00a0 He knew all the right people.\u00a0 He said all the right things.\u00a0 But unlike Augustine, whose celebrity was originally founded on his potency rather than potential, Pelagius never repented.\u00a0 He was fully justified; I mean, self-justified.<\/p>\n<p>Pelagius would never be caught writing something as humiliating as <em>The Confessions<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Pelagius was the golden calf.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cConcupiscence\u201d is saying \u201cyes\u201d when we should have said \u201cno\u201d.
