{"id":324,"date":"2013-03-26T01:25:55","date_gmt":"2013-03-26T01:25:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/75.103.96.165\/blog\/?p=324"},"modified":"2014-10-07T23:02:38","modified_gmt":"2014-10-07T23:02:38","slug":"thoughts-on-sin-by-ted-peters-1994-anxiety-2f","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=324","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on Sin by Ted Peters (1994) Anxiety 2F"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So do people kill others in order to relieve their own fear of being killed?\u00a0 Or do they kill others in order to relieve their fear that the mere existence of the other threatens \u201csomething that they have, or could have had, or pretend to have\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Did Becker title his book <em>The Structure of Evil<\/em>?\u00a0 Or was it <em>Escape from Evil<\/em>?\u00a0 Did he write out of a fear of loss?\u00a0 Did he write for his own self-esteem?<\/p>\n<p>Ernest Becker located <em>anxiety<\/em> in the \u201cmodern\u201d denial of death.\u00a0 But <em>An Archaeology of the Fall<\/em> suggests an alternate situation: Anxiety is <em>not<\/em> \u201cnot knowing any better\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Anxiety is the fear of being without your <em>xiety<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>People are anxious because they fear they will lose <em>xiety<\/em>, not only what they have, but what they could have had, or even pretend to have.<\/p>\n<p><em>Xiety<\/em> is perceived as actual, so actual that people can commit any crime in fear of this loss \u2013 of what they have \u2013 of what they could have had \u2013 of what they pretend to have.<\/p>\n<p>People kill others in order to continue their charades.<\/p>\n<p>So Peters\u2019 next chapter addresses the question: What makes <em>xiety<\/em> possible?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So do people kill others in order to relieve their own fear of being killed?\u00a0 Or do they kill others in order to relieve their fear that the mere existence of the other threatens \u201csomething that they have, or could have had, or pretend to have\u201d?
