{"id":310,"date":"2013-03-16T01:19:19","date_gmt":"2013-03-16T01:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/75.103.96.165\/blog\/?p=310"},"modified":"2014-10-07T23:02:39","modified_gmt":"2014-10-07T23:02:39","slug":"thoughts-on-sin-by-ted-peters-1994-introduction-1c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=310","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on Sin by Ted Peters (1994) Introduction 1C"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How does Peter\u2019s view of \u201cradical evil\u201d match the appearance of the serpent in Chapter 11B of <em>An Archaeology of the Fall<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>Eve was curious about that forbidden fruit.\u00a0 She had covetousness, and maybe gluttony.\u00a0 She harbored a na\u00efve, perhaps sinful, intentionality \u2013 <em>then<\/em> \u2013 as if by magic, there was the serpent, assuring her that everything she imagined was true.\u00a0 So she ate the fruit and gave it to her husband.\u00a0 He ate.\u00a0 Only <em>then<\/em> did they realize that what they had done was evil.\u00a0 They had harmed their relation to their Creator.<\/p>\n<p>From the point of view of Eve and Adam, the intentionality of the sin did not align with the objective evil that resulted from the transgression.\u00a0 They did not recognize their fault until <em>after<\/em> the deed.\u00a0 From the point of view of the serpent, the intentionality of the sin aligned with the evil that resulted from the transgression.\u00a0 The serpent was aware of her fault <em>before<\/em> the deed.<\/p>\n<p>The serpent was radically evil.\u00a0 The serpent intended and performed deliberate harm by simply telling the truth to someone who was a little tempted and a little confused.\u00a0 Eve was not radically evil.\u00a0 She naively gave the serpent an opportunity to render harm.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, from a psychoanalytic point of view, one could say that the serpent was Eve\u2019s own unconscious projection.<\/p>\n<p>Does that mean, when we innocently and senselessly sin on one level, we habituate \u201cour capacities to sin\u201d on other levels; levels that are less innocent and less senseless?\u00a0\u00a0 Also, are these less innocent and less senseless levels simply marked with an increased <em>unconscious awareness<\/em> of our own sin-filled intentionality?<\/p>\n<p>To me, this sounds totally New Age.\u00a0 We become \u201cradical\u201d (or \u201crooted\u201d) when we become <em>consciously aware<\/em> of our <em>unconscious motivations<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRadical evil\u201d is the commission of acts with full <em>conscious awareness<\/em> \u2013 of harm and sinful intentionality.<\/p>\n<p>Peters\u2019 definition of \u201cradical evil\u201d fits hand in glove with his previous work on the New Age Movement.<\/p>\n<p>So, it is, perhaps, without irony that his book follows one of the many consciousness-raising New Age formulas: Dr. Peters says that one can get to radical evil in seven steps.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How does Peter\u2019s view of \u201cradical evil\u201d match the appearance of the serpent in Chapter 11B of An Archaeology of the Fall?
