{"id":196,"date":"2013-03-01T01:38:17","date_gmt":"2013-03-01T01:38:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/75.103.96.165\/blog\/?p=196"},"modified":"2014-10-07T23:02:55","modified_gmt":"2014-10-07T23:02:55","slug":"thoughts-on-original-sin-by-tatha-wiley-2002-8d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=196","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on Original Sin by Tatha Wiley (2002) 8D"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The modern advantage of formulating human nature as intellect(moral(religious)) comes from the fact that each of these levels can be observed.<\/p>\n<p>Lonergan asks us to observe activities related to each level: experience (for religious); judgment (for moral); understanding (for intellect); and decision (for all three).<\/p>\n<p>Each of these activities has a corresponding transcendental norm or \u201csubjectivity\u201d.\u00a0 These are \u201cbe attentive\u201d (for religious), \u201cbe reasonable\u201d (for moral); \u201cbe smart\u201d (for intellect) and \u201cbe holy, loving and responsible\u201d (for all three).<\/p>\n<p>Note how one feature in each of Lonergan\u2019s lists steps out of the nested model of human nature (which parallels the medieval static, logical and essentialist perspective) by reflecting all three levels.<\/p>\n<p>The activity, \u201cdecision\u201d and the subjectivity \u201cbe holy, loving and responsible), belong to the existential situation (which steps beyond the medieval static perspective).<\/p>\n<p>These two existential features, which may be called \u201chabitus\u201d, are correspondingly nested: \u201cbe holy, loving, and responsible\u201d(\u201cdecision\u201d(missing feature)).<\/p>\n<p>What is this missing feature that exists in the realm of possibility?<\/p>\n<p>Lonergan provides a clue to the missing feature by claiming that the subject of human development is \u201cself-transcendence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSelf-transcendence\u201d makes \u201cdecision\u201d possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDecision\u201d situates the possibility of \u201cself-transcendence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe holy, loving and responsible\u201d puts \u201cdecision\u201d into context.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDecision\u201d makes \u201cbe holy, loving and responsible\u201d actual.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The modern advantage of formulating human nature as intellect(moral(religious)) comes from the fact that each of these levels can be observed.
