Alberg 2013 4C"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dante almost got himself petrified during his voyage through Hell.\u00a0 The furies called for Medusa to appear.<\/p>\n<p>They should have called for Nietzsche and Rousseau. They were equally capable of closing a symbolic order and making it watertight.\u00a0 When they looked out onto their world, they saw only imitators or detractors.<\/p>\n<p>The furies\u2019 call would have instigated a hilarious scene, where Nietzsche and Rousseau regarded one another, and Nietzsche saw a \u201ctheoretical man\u201d and Rousseau saw a \u201cman without reason, full of primitive associations\u201d, before each turning the other to stone, or maybe, before both falling in love.<\/p>\n<p>When Medusa looked out, she saw only women and stones, so intense was her mimetic rivalry.<\/p>\n<p>When Dante looked out, he did not turn anyone to stone.<\/p>\n<p>Dante saw through the eyes of a sinner.\u00a0 His message was: Do not mimic me.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, he spoke a language (a symbolic order) much larger than himself, a symbolic order that could never close itself off as the imitators imitated and the detractors detracted, because the moment that one looked at the empty space, one saw the only thing that could not be \u2013 must not be \u2013 \u201cthe object that brings us all into relation\u201d: a resurrected corpse.<\/p>\n<p>Yet there He was.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dante almost got himself petrified during his voyage through Hell.\u00a0 The furies called for Medusa to appear.
