{"id":14,"date":"2012-11-26T01:00:59","date_gmt":"2012-11-26T01:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/75.103.96.165\/blog\/?p=14"},"modified":"2014-10-07T23:03:14","modified_gmt":"2014-10-07T23:03:14","slug":"thoughts-on-evolution-and-the-sin-in-eden-a-new-christian-synthesis-1998-03","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=14","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on Evolution and the Sin in Eden: A New Christian Synthesis (1998) 03"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Zimmerman concluded that Adam and Eve were <em>Homo sapiens<\/em>.\u00a0 So he placed the stories of Adam and Eve \u2013 as the first humans \u2013 before the dates of the first appearance of fossils belonging to our species.\u00a0 He reviewed the results of mitochondrial and Y-chromosome DNA tracing to an originating population \u2013 or maybe, couple \u2013 dating to over one hundred thousand years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the Genesis text indicates a couple.\u00a0 After all, Adam and Eve (as a population) could not sire Seth (as an individual).<\/p>\n<p>What does this imply?\u00a0 Did the first genealogy cover a huge timespan, from the first humans, through the expansion of humanity to all the continents, through the dawn of civilization?\u00a0 Almost unaware of the absurdity of his conclusion, Zimmerman estimated the timespan to be 200,000 years.<\/p>\n<p>Zimmerman then quoted from the encyclical letter <em>Humani Generis<\/em> (Pope Pius XII, 1950):\u00a0 The first eleven chapters of Genesis \u2026 have a na\u00efve, symbolic way of speaking, well suited to the understanding of primitive people.\u00a0 But they disclose important truths, upon which the attainment of our eternal salvation depends, and they also give a popular description of the origin of the human race and of the chosen people \u2026 (perhaps) the ancient authors drew some of their material from current popular stories \u2026 but in must be remembered that they did so under the impulse of divine inspiration which preserved them from all error in selecting and assessing the documents (materials) that they used.<\/p>\n<p>After this quote (in Chapter 5), Zimmerman moves directly to a reading of Genesis 2:4 on.<\/p>\n<p>The jump \u2013 concatenation \u2013 from the association of Adam and Eve to the evolution of our species to the Genesis 2:4 text is revealing.\u00a0\u00a0 The pope\u2019s quote serves like a patch joining two garments.\u00a0 The patch covers 198,000 years.\u00a0 Even more amazing, Zimmerman does not try to show how the first association meets the criteria contained in the literary patch.<\/p>\n<p>In the next blog, I want to examine how <em>An Archaeology of the Fall<\/em> meets \u2013 or fails to meet &#8211; the criteria formulated by Pope Pius XII in 1950.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Zimmerman concluded that Adam and Eve were Homo sapiens.\u00a0 So he placed the stories of Adam and Eve \u2013 as the first humans \u2013 before the dates of the first appearance of fossils belonging to our species.\u00a0 He reviewed the results of mitochondrial and Y-chromosome DNA tracing to an originating population \u2013 or maybe, couple [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-14","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-the-science-of-original-sin"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.9 -
