Two accounts in Genesis 1-11 directly speak to the difference in the Lebenswelts of hand-speech and speech-alone talk.\u00a0 One is the Table of Nations.\u00a0 The other is the Tower of Babel.<\/p>\n
In the Table of Nations, the orientation of the nations is situational.\u00a0 It is based on the accident of descent.\u00a0 All these diverse nations have a common source, Noah.\u00a0 In this Table, one experiences the \u201clocal\u201d as \u201cuniversal\u201d.<\/p>\n
In the Tower of Babel, the orientation of the people came from the faculties of the spirit.\u00a0 They decided to build a tower because they judged that they could reach the Heavens (and thereby invade that esoteric realm).\u00a0 Their judgment ordered their intellects and wills. Their language helped them to experience their differences as \u201ccommon\u201d.<\/p>\n
Once their language was confounded, they experienced their differences as alienating.\u00a0 The \u201clocal\u201d became simply \u201clocal\u201d.\u00a0 The \u201cuniversal\u201d was experienced as alienating.<\/p>\n
Did God confound their language?\u00a0 Maybe.\u00a0 But the idea that \u201cspeech-alone constructs a symbolic order that can \u2018lift off\u2019 in the creation of its own referentiality\u201d offers a complementary explanation.\u00a0 The ideology used to construct the Tower altered the language itself.<\/p>\n
In terms of nestedness:<\/p>\n
The oneness of the people and the language made the situation possible<\/p>\n
The situation was the act of building the Tower of Babel (no doubt, a ziggurat)<\/p>\n
Religious ideology called for building the Tower<\/p>\n
But, the Lebenswelt could not support the edifice.\u00a0 Ideology compensated by changing the meaning of words \u2013 making them more esoteric so that complaints were always misinterpreted as a signal to continue building – until the base \u2013 the potential to be one people \u2013 that was taken for granted in the world of hand-speech talk \u2013 crumbled.<\/p>\n
