The withdrawal of a primordial \u201corientation\u201d at the time of the Fall artistically resonates with the loss of the Paleolithic Lebenswelt with the adoption of speech-alone talk (presented in An Archaeology of the Fall<\/em>).<\/p>\n In the hand talk world, there was no question of orientation because the tradition \u2013 the Lebenswelt – of the group (village, tribe, whatever one wants to call it) was holistic.\u00a0 Every aspect of the hand-talk culture oriented the individual.\u00a0 Parts indicated the whole.\u00a0 Hand-talkers could not articulate the precepts of Freedom and Justice, but they lived them nevertheless.\u00a0 They lived them within their tradition.<\/p>\n Differences between groups were \u201cexplained\u201d by traditions within the group.\u00a0 Differences among individuals within groups were \u201cexplained\u201d by traditions within the group.\u00a0 The logic of difference practiced within the group may have enhanced boundaries and distinctions, but it always unified the group.\u00a0 \u201cDifferences\u201d were experienced as common. The \u201cparticular\u201d was the \u201cuniversal\u201d.\u00a0 The \u201clocal\u201d was the \u201cuniversal\u201d.<\/p>\n Hand-talk traditions were both flexible and inflexible.\u00a0 Cultural evolution proceeded in a fashion consistent with Stephen Gould\u2019s Doctrine of Punctuated Equilibrium.\u00a0 Change would occur when referentiality itself changed.\u00a0 The tribe came across a new type of food, a new way of eating, a new way of accomplishing goals, and so forth.\u00a0 Their words changed.\u00a0 Their tradition changed.\u00a0 Cultural traditions were always under selection pressure in regards to reproductive success.<\/p>\n Then, prior to the emergence of civilization, our ancestor\u2019s Lebenswelt changed.\u00a0 Once the hand- component of hand-speech talk was dropped, unconstrained complexity was potentiated.\u00a0 The \u201clocal\u201d became \u201clocal\u201d as opposed to \u201cuniversal\u201d.\u00a0 The \u201cuniversal\u201d was left to incorporate groups belonging to increasingly distinct labor and social specializations.\u00a0 Each group spoke its own \u201clanguage\u201d within the umbrella of the society\u2019s \u201clanguage\u201d.\u00a0 From those languages, the participants produced diverse social constructions.<\/p>\n Speech-alone talking societies faced a problem: Do we hold onto the old ways of experiencing orientation consistent with the familiar ways of referentiality \u2013 or \u2013 adopt new ways of experiencing orientation consistent with the social construction?<\/p>\n The benefits of unconstrained complexity were obvious.\u00a0 The loss of orientation was hidden.<\/p>\n No doubt the shamans of old resisted trends to unconstrained complexity.\u00a0 In a sense, they were the first prophets.\u00a0 But they could not stop the trends when conditions favored increasingly unconstrained complexity.
