{"id":127,"date":"2013-01-21T01:00:56","date_gmt":"2013-01-21T01:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/75.103.96.165\/blog\/?p=127"},"modified":"2014-10-07T23:02:56","modified_gmt":"2014-10-07T23:02:56","slug":"thoughts-on-original-sin-by-tatha-wiley-2002-4e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=127","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on Original Sin by Tatha Wiley (2002) 4E"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A stunning change occurred between Augustine and Anselm.\u00a0 The Stoic and Platonic model of the (immaterial) soul falling into the (material) body by way of (spiritual &#8211; fateful) descent had been forgotten.\u00a0 Now, the potential for human action consists of faculties, powers and capacities that are \u201cof nature\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the Stoic and Platonic model remained \u2013 like an apparition \u2013 in fantasy, legend and ideal.\u00a0 St. Thomas felt its presence through both Augustine and Aristotle.\u00a0 He proposed a narrative theme of humans coming from and returning to God.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, St. Thomas used Aristotle to further Anselm\u2019s model.\u00a0 Consider human purposes or \u201cends\u201d.\u00a0 Human faculties \u201cof nature\u201d are designed to achieve finite ends.\u00a0 Human faculties \u201cof spirit\u201d are designed to achieve transcendent ends.\u00a0 Our daily struggles are in-between, situating our faculties \u201cof nature\u201d and being contextualized by our faculties \u201cof spirit\u201d.\u00a0 Without supernatural gifts, we can never properly achieve transcendent ends.\u00a0 We fall into sin, where finite ends are substituted for infinite ends.<\/p>\n<p>The Fall of Adam and Eve corresponds to a withdrawal of supernatural gifts \u2013 \u201csanctifying grace\u201d \u2013 and the sacrifice of Jesus corresponds to a re-establishment of a proper relation between God and humans.<\/p>\n<p>The divine presence was not lost with the Fall.\u00a0 Sanctifying grace \u2013 the ability to order our spiritual faculties to proper transcendent ends \u2013 was lost.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A stunning change occurred between Augustine and Anselm.\u00a0 The Stoic and Platonic model of the (immaterial) soul falling into the (material) body by way of (spiritual &#8211; fateful) descent had been forgotten.\u00a0 Now, the potential for human action consists of faculties, powers and capacities that are \u201cof nature\u201d.
