Anselm of Canterbury (d. 1109) considered Original Sin when feudalism reigned.\u00a0 The keystones of feudalism were obedience and honor.\u00a0 So the Lord was the first Lord.\u00a0 Adam was the first subject of the Lord.\u00a0 Adam disobeyed and so dishonored his Master.<\/p>\n
One can almost feel the flutter as the ladies of the court looked up from their illuminated manuscripts, decorated in indigo and gold, to hear Anselm speak in that wonderful Medieval way.\u00a0 One can almost smell the warning to the knights and dukes, always conniving in their service of the king: Disobey and you will be cast from the Eden that is England.<\/p>\n
The price \u2013 the retribution \u2013 for Adam\u2019s insult was to \u201cno longer have the Lord as Master\u201d.\u00a0 As soon as the Eden disappeared behind the flaming sword, the descendants of Adam and Eve no longer had the supernatural gift (a faculty \u201cof spirit\u201d) of \u201cOriginal Justice\u201d.\u00a0 This supernatural gift permitted the reason and will (the highest faculties \u201cof nature\u201d) to fulfill the transcendent purpose of humans: First, to obey God.\u00a0 Second, keep justice.<\/p>\n
Adam and Eve\u2019s transgression was an act of \u201cfreedom\u201d that covered over the true nature of \u201cfreedom\u201d; \u201cthe absence of sin\u201d.\u00a0 In concert with Paul, Anselm concluded that \u201cin Adam, all sinned\u201d (Romans 5:12).<\/p>\n
With the coming of Jesus the Messiah, freedom is restored.\u00a0 His sacraments pour Sanctifying Grace into the faculties of the spirit.\u00a0 Eat his flesh.\u00a0 Drink his blood.\u00a0 Look at those illuminations.\u00a0 They tell the story in purple and gold.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
