Basak&#8217;s Book (2025) &#8220;Sumerian Mythology&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 (Part 17 of 20)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0208 Chapters 4 and 5 of Basak&#8217;s text discuss the generation of the major and minor gods that comprise the divine council, the Anunnaki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would like to start with the actuality<sub>2<\/sub> of Enlil&#8217;s separation of the sky and the earth from the point of view of Lotman&#8217;s thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0209 Here is a picture of Lotman&#8217;s empirio-schematic virtually contextualizing a nested form of Enlil&#8217;s creation story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide42-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide42-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11068\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide42-1.png 540w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide42-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Uh oh, does this figure imply that Lotman&#8217;s thing is now operating on the perspective level?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does that mean that an unfolded empirio-schematic judgment occupies the perspective level?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh my.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0210 As mentioned earlier (and completely missed by Basak), the actualities of An<sub>2<\/sub> and Ki<sub>2<\/sub> are further differentiated in the creation of the other members of the divine council, resulting in a surprisingly rich actuality<sub>2<\/sub> composed of <em>two contiguous real category-based nested forms<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide43-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide43-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11069\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide43-1.png 540w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide43-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that the green separation consists of Enlil&#8217;s domain, which is not a real element, but a substance.&nbsp; The [air] is <em>the contiguity between the heavens and the earth<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0211 The categorical qualities within heavenly and earthly nested forms are colored by the fact that the nested forms are real elements within a divine actuality<sub>2b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0212 The thirdness of An<sub>3<\/sub> and Ki<sub>3<\/sub> is reified into two complementary normal contexts<sub>3<\/sub>.&nbsp; They do not align with one another.&nbsp; They do not exclude one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0213 The secondness of Utu<sub>2<\/sub>, Nanna<sub>2<\/sub>, Ninhursag<sub>2<\/sub> and Ereshlugal<sub>2<\/sub> is as solid as the sun, moon, mountains and underworld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0214 Finally, the gods of Enki<sub>1<\/sub> and Inanna<sub>1<\/sub> associate to the realm of possibility, as if those possibilities are actual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surely, these are speculative observations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, these are the ones that I want to explore, using Basak&#8217;s text for mythological accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0215 I start with Enki<sub>1<\/sub>.&nbsp; Part III of chapter 6 recounts the congratulatory celebration following the creation of humans as the resolution of the Igigi&#8217;s labor stoppage in the Eridu Genesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, the gods throw a party.&nbsp; Enki<sub>1<\/sub> and Ninmah<sub>2<\/sub> (Ninhursag<sub>2<\/sub>) are both in attendance.&nbsp; Enki<sub>1<\/sub> is the one who comes up with the idea of creating humans in order to solve the divine labor dispute.&nbsp; Ninmah<sub>2<\/sub> is crucial to fashioning the human out of clay from Enki&#8217;s domain, the Abzu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Already, the impression is made that Enki<sub>1<\/sub> belongs to the realm of possibility (the category of firstness) and Ninmah<sub>2<\/sub> belongs to the realm of actuality (the category of secondness).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0216 After drinking jugs of beer, the two gods engage in a contest about who can create the most useless humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0217 Ninmah<sub>2<\/sub> goes first.&nbsp; She creates six messed up humans.&nbsp; One has weak hands.&nbsp; Another is blind.&nbsp; A third has broken feet.&nbsp; A fourth is incontinent.&nbsp; A fifth is barren.&nbsp; A sixth is sexless.&nbsp; This comports with <em>what one expects for a goddess imbued with secondness<\/em> (in regards to Ki<sub>3<\/sub>) within Enlil<sub>3<\/sub>&#8216;s secondness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enki<sub>1<\/sub>&#8216;s retort addresses the question, &#8220;How can each disfigured or dysfunctional person be a productive member of society?&#8221;&nbsp; He assigns different specializations to each.&nbsp; In doing so, he<sub>1<\/sub> offers a divine precedent for inclusion and for balancing apparent contradictions (between a person&#8217;s functionality and that person&#8217;s job).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0218 Enki<sub>1<\/sub> goes next.&nbsp; He fashions a creature that looks like the following.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide44-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide44-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11070\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide44-1.png 540w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide44-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It cannot sit.&nbsp; It cannot stand.&nbsp; It cannot walk.&nbsp; It cannot eat bread or drink beer.&nbsp; It cannot speak or listen.&nbsp; What can this flawed, helpless being do?&nbsp; It cannot do anything.&nbsp; Ninmah<sub>2<\/sub>, the so-called &#8220;mother goddess&#8221;, is flummoxed.&nbsp;&nbsp; She<sub>2<\/sub> curses Enki<sub>1<\/sub> for his folly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0219 Chapter 5 discusses the goddess Inanna<sub>1<\/sub> (in Sumerian) and Ishtar<sub>1<\/sub> (in Akkadian).&nbsp; She is queen of the heaven and earth, but mostly the earth, since her interests include love and war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, she reigns over the contradictory domains of love, beauty, sexuality and fertility as well as war, conflict, political power and intrigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To me, that sounds like the category of firstness.&nbsp; The logics of firstness are inclusive.&nbsp; Firstness allows contradictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0220 The following story associates to <em>the forty-day retrograde of the planet Venus<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0221 Inanna<sub>1<\/sub> desires power (one wonders why) even from Kur, the underworld, the domain of her elder sister, the goddess Ereslugal<sub>2<\/sub>.&nbsp; She<sub>1<\/sub> decides to go herself<sub>1<\/sub>.&nbsp; Inanna<sub>1<\/sub> adorns herself before her descent, but she is forced to surrender a piece of her regalia at each of the seven gates.&nbsp; By the time she gets to Ereshlugal<sub>2<\/sub>&#8216;s throne-room, she is naked and powerless to defend herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uh-oh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0222 Ereshlugal<sub>2<\/sub> calls the Anunnaki, once the celestial divine council (in the Sumerian sign-world), now a court ruling over the fate of the deceased (in the Akkadian sign-world).&nbsp; Their decision is brutal.&nbsp; Inanna<sub>1<\/sub> is killed and her corpse is hung on a hook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is this what happens when potential<sub>1<\/sub> enters the underworld of actuality<sub>2<\/sub> in order to obtain power?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is this what happens when the planet Venus enters into combustion (conjunction) with the sun?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0223 As one might expect for a goddess imbued with potential<sub>1<\/sub> (in the normal context of Ki<sub>3<\/sub>) as well as actuality<sub>2<\/sub> (in the normal context of Enlil<sub>3<\/sub>), after three days, Inanna&#8217;s servant Ninsubar<sub>1<\/sub>, and Enki<sub>1<\/sub>, find a way to rescue her<sub>1<\/sub>.&nbsp; A deal<sub>2<\/sub> is struck, Inanna<sub>1<\/sub> may leave the underworld alive if she<sub>1<\/sub> provides a substitute for&#8230; you know&#8230; that hook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0224 Upon her return, she<sub>1<\/sub> finds a substitute right away.&nbsp; A shepherd king sits on her empty throne.&nbsp; Out come the demons to drag the presumptuous fellow down to serve as Inanna<sub>1<\/sub>&#8216;s substitute on a meat-hook in hell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0225 While these two instances do not grant certainty to the assignment of Enki<sub>1<\/sub> and Inanna<sub>1<\/sub> to the realm of possibility for An<sub>3<\/sub> and Ki<sub>3<\/sub> respectively, within Enlil<sub>3<\/sub>&#8216;s differentiated actuality<sub>2<\/sub>, they do lend credence to the intelligence of the guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isn&#8217;t that the most that we can expect in a world perfused with sign-relations?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0208 Chapters 4 and 5 of Basak&#8217;s text discuss the generation of the major and minor gods that comprise the divine council, the Anunnaki.
