Michael Jones&#8217;s Book (2025) &#8220;Walking with a Bible and a Gun&#8221;\u00a0 (Part 23 of 27)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0284 Chapter 42 reports on Walter Lippmann (1889-1974), born in a wealthy Jewish family in New York.&nbsp; He receives a classical education at a private school.&nbsp; In 1922, after America&#8217;s victory in the First World War, &#8220;the war to end all wars&#8221;, he publishes a book titled <em>Public Opinion<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps, he knows that the similarly positioned Edward Bernays (1891-1995), nephew of renown psychotherapist, Sigmund Freud, is hot on the same topic, publishing <em>Crystallizing Public Opinion<\/em> (1923) and <em>Propaganda<\/em> (1928) in quick succession.&nbsp; After the Second World War, Bernay capitalizes on his fame by writing <em>Public Relations<\/em> (1952) and <em>The Engineering of Consent<\/em> (1955).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0285 I like to call the First World War, 1914-1918, <em>the First Battle Among the Enlightenment Gods, The War Among Naive Mercantilists<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this time, Lippman works for the intelligence section of the Allied Expeditionary Force in France.&nbsp; He helps draft President Woodrow Wilson&#8217;s Fourteen Point Speech.&nbsp; He hears about the success of George Creel&#8217;s Committee on Public Information, America&#8217;s first propaganda ministry.&nbsp; Creel (1876-1953) later wrote a tell-all titled, <em>How We Advertised America<\/em> (1920).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0286 Lippmann concludes that identity<sub>3b<\/sub> may be framed as a typology, based on (what E. dwells in content-level matter<sub>2am<\/sub>.&nbsp; It<sub>2am<\/sub> substantiates a form<sub>2af<\/sub>, corresponding to the way that we experience the world<sub>2af<\/sub>.&nbsp; We are structured<sub>3a<\/sub> to be disposed<sub>1a<\/sub> to certain attitutes<sub>2af<\/sub> that are informed by one or another stereotype<sub>2am<\/sub>.&nbsp; The task of propaganda<sub>1b<\/sub> is to situate our attitudes<sub>2a<\/sub> by placing a typology in content-level matter<sub>2am<\/sub>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, <em>the form<sub>2af<\/sub> that we have been structured<sub>3a<\/sub> to experience<sub>2af<\/sub><\/em> is situated according to <em>a principle of unity<sub>2bm<\/sub><\/em> that substantiates <em>an embodiment<sub>2bf<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp; The task of propaganda<sub>1b<\/sub> is to prime<sub>2bm<\/sub> a response<sub>2bf<\/sub> through the second type of &#8220;stereotype&#8221;, dwelling in the situation-level principle of unity<sub>2bm<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two types in stereotype play the same music through different level matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result sounds so real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0288 Lippmann writes at the dawn of <em>popular acceptance of moving pictures<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0289 Moving pictures?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>the realm of image processing,<\/em> a sequence of slightly different images<sub>2am<\/sub> substantiate the form of a mechanically driven display of one image following the other<sub>2af.<\/sub>&nbsp; Then, the human mind has the power to apply a principle of unity<sub>2bm<\/sub> that substantiates the embodiment of motion<sub>2bf<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, sequences of moving-picture clips<sub>2am<\/sub> may be strung together<sub>2af<\/sub> and the audience will apply another principle of unity<sub>2bm<\/sub> to appreciate a scene<sub>2bf<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This constitutes the first type in &#8220;stereotype&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scenes portray <em>the content-level matters<sub>2am<\/sub> of action and plotline<sub>2af<\/sub>,<\/em> and the audience spontaneous situates <em>the content-level form<sub>2af<\/sub><\/em> using <em>an implicit principle of unity<sub>2bm<\/sub><\/em> into <em>a cognitively embodied &#8220;narrative&#8221;<sub>2bf<\/sub>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This constitutes the second type in &#8220;stereotype&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result looks so real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0290 It is almost as if identity<sub>3b<\/sub>, powers<sub>1b<\/sub>, structure<sub>3a<\/sub> and dispositions<sub>1a<\/sub> are simply going along for the ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why would this be the case?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is this how humans evolved to be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0291 So, what happens when stereotypes are promulgated (through cinematic narratives manufactured in order to serve&#8230; how shall I say it?&#8230; &#8220;special interests&#8221;)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, Jones wonders whether Ernest Hemingway and the Lost Generation are stereotypes manufactured by Madison Avenue (New York) and Hollywood (Los Angeles) as expressions of American cultural imperialism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A new system<\/em> arises in order to manipulate <em>public opinion<sub>2bm<\/sub><\/em> and orchestrate <em>the accumulation of power and money<sub>2bf<\/sub><\/em> through <em>the invention and the promulgation of stereotypes<sub>1am<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The vessel<sub>3b(1b)<\/sub> that accrues both power and money<\/em> is <em>a network of big(il)lib power brokers<\/em> who fashion themselves as &#8220;liberal&#8221; (that is, <em>freedom-oriented)<\/em> but are really interested in using <em>the authority of government<\/em> to suppress <em>anyone who would hold them to moral account<\/em> (that is, <em>responsible)<\/em>.&nbsp; In other words, this vessel is a contradiction in terms, being simultaneously liberal and illiberal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, I label this network, &#8220;big-government (il) liberalism&#8221;, or &#8220;big(il)lib&#8221;
