Michael Jones&#8217;s Book (2025) &#8220;Walking with a Bible and a Gun&#8221;\u00a0 (Part 22 of 27)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0270 Chapter 43 opens with a quick synopsis.&nbsp; By 1902, the American frontier had been replaced by eye-catching progress. &nbsp;Also, popular novels fictionalize <em>the failure of Protestant America to envision a common identity<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes sense, in so far as, in the Protestant movement, every literate person is granted equal disposition<sub>1a<\/sub> to read the Bible<sub>2am<\/sub>, and render his own interpretation<sub>2af<\/sub>.&nbsp; That interpretation<sub>2af<\/sub> generally falls within established congregations (the Puritans, the Methodists, the Presbyterians, and so on).&nbsp; The American Revolution accommodates the various powers<sub>1b<\/sub> by establishing a relatively weak tripartite central (or &#8220;federal&#8221;) government over strong state governments<sub>1b<\/sub>.&nbsp; This political arrangement is a practical solution<sub>1b<\/sub>, allowing people of certain faiths<sub>1b<\/sub> the freedom<sub>3b<\/sub> to self-segregate into their own jurisdiction<sub>2b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0271 Here is a picture of (what I will call) the Virginian&#8217;s option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide60.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide60.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10963\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide60.png 540w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide60-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0273 What is this potential of &#8216;gun&#8217;<sub>1a<\/sub>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is easy to understand how the Bible (for Christians) or nature (for Transcendentalists)<sub>2bm<\/sub> unites individuals of like minds<sub>2af<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how does the &#8216;gun&#8217;<sub>1a<\/sub> potentiate that actuality<sub>2a<\/sub>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0274 Well, when one is walking<sub>3a<\/sub> with a &#8216;gun&#8217;<sub>1a<\/sub>, one is conveying a meaning<sub>1a<\/sub>, a presence<sub>1b<\/sub> and a message<sub>1c<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meaning<sub>1a<\/sub> has something to do with the possibility of self-defense<sub>1a<\/sub>, especially in regards to mortal conflict.&nbsp; A gun<sub>1a<\/sub> cannot help finding water.&nbsp; A gun<sub>1a<\/sub> can help when a rustler is &#8220;guarding&#8221; the water hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The presence<sub>1b<\/sub> has something to do with the possibility of practical reason<sub>1b<\/sub>.&nbsp; Practical reason<sub>1b<\/sub> allows the people<sub>2bm<\/sub> to stand for themselves<sub>2bf<\/sub>, in the normal context of freedom<sub>3b<\/sub>.&nbsp; Practical reason<sub>1b<\/sub> is another label for &#8216;responsibility&#8217;<sub>1b<\/sub>.&nbsp; Recall that freedom and responsibility constitute a &#8220;co-opposition&#8221;.&nbsp; When one is the normal context<sub>3<\/sub> the other informs the potential<sub>1<\/sub>.&nbsp; Responsibility associates to faith.&nbsp; Freedom associates to grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0275 The message<sub>1c<\/sub>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is a good question, since <em>the perspective level<\/em> does not even appear in the above figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can say the following from the clues offered in the examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0276 Whatever <em>the perspective level<\/em> is, I must assume its normal context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, a perspective-level &#8220;assume<sub>3c<\/sub>&#8221; virtually brings a situation-level identity<sub>3b<\/sub> into relation with the potential of content-level structure<sub>3a<\/sub>.&nbsp; The logics of thirdness are exclusion, complementarity and alignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Virginian&#8217;s option pictured above, I must assume<sub>3c<\/sub> that situation-level freedom<sub>3b<\/sub> (or grace<sub>3b<\/sub>) situates content-level walking<sub>3a<\/sub> (or ideating reality<sub>3a<\/sub>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0277 More crucially, I assume<sub>3c<\/sub> the perspective-level actuality<sub>2c<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, the most magnificent assumption<sub>3c<\/sub> pertains to <em>the object that brings all into relation<sub>2cC<\/sub>. <\/em>That<sub>2cC<\/sub> includes &#8220;God&#8221;.&nbsp; And, perhaps I can add, &#8220;us&#8221;, as participating in this object<sub>2cC<\/sub>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the twentieth-century German philosopher and historian, Eric Voegelin (1901-1985), Christians come up with the most differentiated expression of the society-tier perspective-level actuality<sub>2cC<\/sub>, sometime between the 600s and 1000s, centuries before the so-called &#8220;Reformation&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0278 Finally, I somehow intuitively grasp <em>the potential<sub>1cC<\/sub><\/em> that there can be <em>an object that brings all into relation<sub>2cC<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wonder whether this is where <em>the gun<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em> comes into the picture, as a talisman for <em>consilience<sub>1c<\/sub> in the face of a failure of practical reason<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp; When practical reason<sub>1b<\/sub> fails, then <em>the people cannot stand for themselves<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em> in <em>the illumination of their freedom to assemble<sub>3b<\/sub>, and live<sub>3b<\/sub>, and express themselves<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0279 Where are we to go when <em>people who live without a sense of guilt<sub>1a<\/sub> <\/em>actualize <em>attitudes<sub>2af<\/sub><\/em> that express <em>the hidden grammar of nihilism<sub>2am<\/sub><\/em> in <em>the normal context of their survival<sub>3a<\/sub>?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a jungle out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0280 Here is a diagram containing that question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide61.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide61.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide61.png 540w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide61-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0281 On the situation level, the normal context of criminal expertise (the righteousness of criminals and their lawyers)<sub>3b<\/sub> brings the actuality<sub>2b<\/sub>, {the principles of our subversion<sub>2bm<\/sub> [substantiate] our fitness over our victims<sub>2bf<\/sub>}, into the possibilities inherent in &#8216;criminal reason, which is opportunistic to the core&#8217;<sub>1b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0282 In Chapter 44, Jones looks at <em>The Virginian<\/em>, a novel by Oren Wister (1860-1938).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book is published in 1902.&nbsp;
