Michael Jones&#8217;s Book (2025) &#8220;Walking with a Bible and a Gun&#8221;\u00a0 (Part 18 of 27)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0215 Chapter 20 raises a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What do the Irish, dwelling in their huge ethnic neighborhoods in Boston, New York and Philadelphia, think of the slavery going on in the southern states?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They don&#8217;t have a dog in that fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fight?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some call it &#8220;the War of Northern Aggression&#8221;.&nbsp; Others call it &#8220;the War of Southern Rebellion&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0216 But, what about the American Identity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can Thoreau&#8217;s option be framed in abolitionist terms?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is my guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide50.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide50.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10943\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide50.png 540w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide50-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Freedom<sub>3b<\/sub> becomes righteousness<sub>3b<\/sub>.&nbsp; Political action<sub>1b<\/sub> infiltrates practical reason<sub>1b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0217 What Irishman in America would want to side with the abolitionists, who are Protestants clothed with the garments of innocence<sub>1a<\/sub>&#8230; er&#8230; lack of guilt<sub>1a<\/sub>, because (for the most part) they disdain guns<sub>1a<\/sub> (since carrying a gun implies <em>something wrong<\/em>)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if the Irishman refuses to support the abolitionists, and if the Irishman refuses to take up arms in a war that the Irish have nothing to do with, then he must be on the side of the English-descended slaveholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Correct?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0218 According to their moral superiors (the Protestants who are no longer Calvinists and have taken up the mantle of righteousness, just like the Calvinists once did), the Irish are damned if they do (join their cause and enter into the War of Northern Aggression) and damned if they don&#8217;t (secretly side with the racist English Virginia plantation owners who are conducting the War of Southern Rebellion).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is only appropriate, since <em>the moral superiors of America<\/em> secretly detest <em>the Irish,<\/em> because&#8230; well&#8230; everyone (in the 1860s) knows that an Englishman is human and an Irishman is a slackard, a drinker, a womanizer, an unrepentant Catholic, a singer of ballads, a partier and otherwise worthless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0219 In Chapter 21, the author, E. Michael Jones, flashes forward to relatively recent times, referencing the author, Theodore Allen (1919-2005), who writes the two volume <em>Invention of the White Race<\/em> (1994, 1997), and Noel Ignatiev (1940-2019), who writes <em>How the Irish Became White<\/em> (1995).&nbsp; These two authors are Marxist.&nbsp; The Marxist thing (see points 0018-0019) is {material arrangements [substantiate] human conditions}.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What material arrangements?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, the word &#8220;race&#8221; once referred to ethnicity.&nbsp; The Irish and the Germans and the English were once labeled different &#8220;races&#8221;.&nbsp; In order to match the Marxist thing, &#8220;race&#8221; now refers to phenotypic differences, particularly in regards to northern Europeans and Africans.&nbsp; Phenotypic differences constitute material conditions.&nbsp; The human condition? The Irish (of the 1840s through the 1860s) are racists because they refuse to side with the Catholic-repudiating Northern abolitionists and therefore, secretly side with Southern racist institutions of slavery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does that sound familiar?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0220 Do Allen and Ignatiev constellate <em>a version of Thoreau&#8217;s option for the American Identity?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suspect so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are my associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide51.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide51.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10944\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide51.png 540w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide51-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to pure Marxist reason<sub>1a<\/sub>, the Irish and the English fall under the label, &#8220;white&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Marxist practical reason<sub>1b<\/sub>, the &#8220;white&#8221; is a racist who hates &#8220;blacks&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0221 Both Allen and Ignatiev are Marxist scholars.&nbsp; Their righteousness<sub>3b<\/sub> is founded in academic expertise<sub>3b<\/sub>, rather than grace<sub>3b<\/sub>.&nbsp; Also, their freedom<sub>3b<\/sub> to ignore religion (because religion cannot be regarded as a material arrangement) allows them to define the human condition<sub>2bf<\/sub> (where the proletarians are victims of racism) as a product of material arrangements (where the &#8220;whites&#8221; &#8211; both Englishman and Irishman &#8211; arrange materials according to race).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0222 Read that last sentence while ignoring what is in parentheses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then read it again with the parenthesis as editorial comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0223 Naturally, these authors<sub>2bm<\/sub> (as Marxists<sub>2bm<\/sub>) stand for the people<sub>2bf<\/sub> because their expertise<sub>3b<\/sub>&#8230; er&#8230; righteousness<sub>3b<\/sub> operates on the potential of &#8216;practical reason&#8217;<sub>1b<\/sub> (that is, &#8216;political action&#8217;<sub>1b<\/sub>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0224 The power of &#8216;political action&#8217;<sub>1b<\/sub> virtually situates the disposition to engage in &#8216;pure reason that emanates from our lack of guilt&#8217;<sub>1a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lack of guilt<sub>1a<\/sub>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They don&#8217;t carry guns<sub>1a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why don&#8217;t they need guns<sub>1a<\/sub>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like the Quakers before them, they know that <em>the gun<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em> is a talisman to prevent <em>something that could go&#8230; or maybe already has gone&#8230; horribly wrong<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0225 Has something gone wrong?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The righteousness of Marxism<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em> virtually situates <em>an ideated reality<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em> which structures<sub>3a<\/sub> <em>its own expertise<sub>3b<\/sub>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does that sound like the opening scene of Milton&#8217;s <em>Paradise Lost<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of &#8220;I will not serve.&#8221;, the words are &#8220;I will be my own expertise.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0226 Chapter 36 discusses how confusing the American Identity may seem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two-level interscope of identity<sub>3b<\/sub> and structure<sub>3a<\/sub> remains the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Its applications<\/em> shift radically from 1660 to 1760 to 1860 to 1960.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1760, Catholic immigrants make <em>a few percent of the population of the colonies<\/em>.&nbsp; The remainder are Protestants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 1860, Catholics from Germany and Ireland push that percentage close to 50%, while Protestants remain a slim majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0227 The Germans and the Irish Catholics already have strong identities.&nbsp; The Germans celebrate Saint Boniface.&nbsp; The Catholics celebrate Saint Patrick.&nbsp; They do not need to adopt the American Identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, a power struggle between German and Irish clergy produces a weird twist.&nbsp; The Irish bishops lock out the Germans, using the excuse that the Irish version of the Catholic Church is more American.&nbsp; German clerics are driven out of American Catholic Universities.&nbsp; Some of them find their way to Rome, where they warn the Vatican that the remaining Irish-favored academics are adopting identities similar to Thoreau&#8217;s (as well as Allen&#8217;s and Ignatiev&#8217;s) options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0228 In 1897, an official Vatican newspaper publishes an article about the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does the article say?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Catholic version of the Thoreau option<\/em> (and, in the twentieth century, the Allen and Ignatiev option) praises the separation of church and state, tolerates secret societies, represses foreign languages, encourages public schools as acceptable alternatives to Catholic schools and desires to conform the Church to the spirit of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, the American Irish clergy are interested in going along in order to get along, as far as their Calvinist, Half-Way Covenant, Universalist, Transcendentalist and soon-to-be Marxist brethren are concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0229 In <em>the Thoreau option for the American identity,<\/em> righteousness<sub>3b<\/sub> is &#8216;the freedom to be inspired&#8217;<sub>3b<\/sub> in the grace<sub>3b<\/sub> that operates on the potential of &#8216;practical reason&#8217;<sub>1b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>the Allen and Ignatiev option for the American identity,<\/em> righteousness<sub>3b<\/sub> is &#8216;the freedom to exercise your expertise&#8217;<sub>3b<\/sub> operating on the potential of &#8216;political action&#8217;<sub>1b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0230 In 1899, the pope issues an encyclical condemning &#8220;Americanism&#8221;, thereby officially blocking these options from union with Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is precisely <em>what Calvin would have advocated,<\/em> were he alive today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Americanism&#8221;
