The American Revolution called people to responsibility<sub>3b<\/sub>.&nbsp; The French Revolution&#8217;s slogan of &#8220;Liberty, Equality and Fraternity&#8221; called every man to do what the English and French royalty have been doing since Henry VIII.&nbsp; Just add the qualifier, &#8220;of our undergarments&#8221; to the Parisian slogan to appreciate <em>what shocked Emerson<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence one parenthetical adjustment on the content-level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the astute reader already noticed, &#8216;responsibility<sub>1b<\/sub>&#8216; moves into the realm of potential when freedom<sub>3b<\/sub> becomes the normal context.&nbsp; That is the nature of co-oppositions.&nbsp; When one is the normal context, the other stands as the potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as no one wants to carry a gun<sub>1a<\/sub> because a virtue-signaler<sub>3a<\/sub> will call him &#8220;guilty<sub>1a<\/sub>&#8220;, no one wants to profess &#8220;responsibility<sub>3b<\/sub>&#8221; So, human identity<sub>3b<\/sub> is found in the bounty and the blessings of freedom<sub>3b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does this sound like a religion called, &#8220;Americanism&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0186 What about religion in Europe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Reformation, western Europe divides into Protestant (northern nations) and Catholic (southern nations). &nbsp;The division comes after over a millennium of a common tradition, called &#8220;Christendom&#8221;.&nbsp; Eastern Europe remains Orthodox.&nbsp; Western and eastern Europe split into Catholic (west) and Orthodox (east) centuries earlier.&nbsp; Surely, that is another story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0187 As a result, the American whose identity<sub>3b<\/sub> extols freedom<sub>3b<\/sub> and whose structure<sub>3a<\/sub> is idea-oriented<sub>3a<\/sub>, finds the Europe identity<sub>3b<\/sub> of sheep and shepherds<sub>3b<\/sub> and of faith and Aristotelian reason<sub>3b<\/sub> disorienting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide45.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide45.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10934\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide45.png 540w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide45-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0188 Chapters 16, 23, 24, 28, 32 and 34 and tell the tale of Nathanial Hawthorne, his family, his writings and his life, in light of an encounter with Catholic Identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the identity that the Protestant Reformers (in Chapter 4) dismantled, much to chagrin of the author, Dr. Jones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, the author is eloquent in these chapters, since this topic belongs to his field of technical expertise as a scholar of American literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0189 The Protestant theological construction&#8230; or &#8220;deconstruction&#8221; of Catholic Identity is not conducted for intellectual achievement.&nbsp; Rather, it is promulgated because it removes a brake to sovereign &#8220;progress&#8221;.&nbsp;&nbsp; After the Peace of Westphalia (1648), the sovereign determines which &#8220;religions&#8221; (Christian factions) are permitted in his realm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Revolution counters <em>this elevation of the sovereign over religion<\/em> by requiring, by constitution, that the federal government cannot establish a religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, the American Constitution takes exception from one of the key provisions of the Westphalian compromise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It makes me wonder, &#8220;Precisely what would be required in order to demonstrate that <em>the American federal government<\/em> qualifies as a &#8216;religion&#8217;?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0190 I suppose that the answer depends on how one defines the word, &#8220;religion&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0191 Perhaps, I may go back to the idea that Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphe, as a little noumenon, accrues elements that constitute a big noumenon.&nbsp; With that in mind, I may appreciate <em>what Jones is not telling the reader because he presumes that the reader (somehow) already knows<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture, once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide46.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide46.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10935\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide46.png 540w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide46-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Compare <em>the previous two figures to one another<\/em> and ask, &#8220;How do these big noumena account for Catholic art?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0192 Imagine <em>works of visual art<\/em> portraying <em>the stories of scripture<\/em> to <em>illiterate common folk<\/em> in a way that <em>the matter of the stories [are rendered in] the forms of painting and sculpture<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That would be shocking enough to someone fixed on the written script of the Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0193 Now imagine that these <em>works of visual art<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em> have <em>the power<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em> to express <em>a principle of unity (as matter) in the architectural embodiment of a chapel or cathedral (as form)<sub>2b<\/sub>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That would be even more shocking in so far as we (humans) are disposed<sub>1a<\/sub> to socially construct our identities<sub>3b<\/sub> on the basis of transcendentals such as beauty<sub>1a<\/sub> (the art itself), truth<sub>1a<\/sub> (the stories themselves) and the innate impression<sub>1a<\/sub> that grace inflows nature<sub>1b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0194 <em>What E. Michael Jones presumes that we already know<\/em> is discussed as an interlude in Razie Mah&#8217;s masterwork, <em>How To Define the Word &#8220;Religion&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a category-based treatment of <em>the presence that underlies the word &#8220;religion&#8221;,<\/em> a perspective-level stands above the situation-level within the so-called &#8220;society tier&#8221;.&nbsp; This perspective-level belongs to a civilizational supra-sovereign religion (such as Christendom before the breakup).&nbsp; The situation-level belongs to the sovereign.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That implies that <em>the Reformation<\/em> involves <em>the sovereign-level<\/em> casting aside <em>the supra-sovereign level.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0195 <em>The supra-sovereign<sub>c<\/sub> level of the society<sub>C<\/sub> tier<\/em> contains an <em>actuality<sub>2cC<\/sub><\/em> that is <em>the object that calls all into relation<sub>2cC<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp; For Christians, <em>this object<sub>2cC<\/sub><\/em> contains <em>the Triune God<\/em>.&nbsp; This Triune God occupies three elements of a nested form, the normal context<sub>2<\/sub>, matter<sub>2<\/sub> and form<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, that is not all.&nbsp; Because this object<sub>2cC<\/sub> belongs to the realm of actuality, it<sub>2cC<\/sub> should contain two contiguous real elements.&nbsp; <em>One real element<\/em> is <em>a nested form expressing the Trinity<\/em>.&nbsp; <em>The other real element<\/em> contains&#8230; of all things&#8230; <em>us<\/em>.&nbsp; We are <em>images of God<\/em>.&nbsp; So, the contiguity between <em>{Jesus (the Son) [interpellates] us}<sub>2cf<\/sub> as form<\/em> and {<em>the Father [and] His Son}<sub>2cm<\/sub> as matter<\/em> must be <em>a substance<\/em> <em>that.<\/em>.. well&#8230; <em>one cannot label with a spoken word<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, one can feel that substance when receiving the Eucharist during a traditional Mass in Notre Dame Cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0196 Here is a picture of <em>the object that brings all into relation<sub>2cC<\/sub><\/em> in the most differentiated expression articulated in any civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide47.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide47.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10936\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide47.png 540w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide47-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This perspective-level relational object<sub>2cC<\/sub><\/em> accounts for why <em>the Catholic disposition<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em> senses that <em>the sacraments<sub>1a<\/sub><\/em> offer <em>the structures<sub>3a<\/sub><\/em> that have <em>the power<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em> to draw us into <em>mystical union<sub>1cfC<\/sub><\/em> <em>with Jesus, the Son of the Father<sub>2cfC<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0197 Now, the student should read chapters 18, 19, 20, 21 and 36.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0182 Where was I?
