The guess relies on the title, Introduction and Chapter 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide37.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide37.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10922\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide37.png 540w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide37-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0160 The above figure comports with the author&#8217;s expression, &#8220;existence precedes essence&#8221;, writ large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The esse_ce of the content level<\/em> precedes (or calls forth) <em>the essence of the situation level<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0161 When the author proclaims that existence precedes essence, he initially points to Aristotle&#8217;s thing.&nbsp; Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphe is matter<sub>2am<\/sub> [substance] form<sub>2af<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Peirce&#8217;s philosophy, actuality<sub>2<\/sub> consists of two contiguous real elements.&nbsp; On the content level, the two real elements parallel the real elements in Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphe: matter<sub>2am<\/sub> and form<sub>2af<\/sub>.&nbsp; The contiguity is labeled with a much-abused word, &#8220;substance&#8221;.&nbsp; [Substance] can be either noun or verb.&nbsp; In the above figure, [it] is rendered as a verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0162 However, the author&#8217;s proclamation <em>writ small<\/em> is open to an expansion <em>writ large<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Contemporary scholarship on Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphe<\/em> ends up generating <em>the following sensible construction<\/em>.&nbsp; Aristotle&#8217;s hylomorphe<sub>2a<\/sub> portrays a thing<sub>2a<\/sub> which is also (for scientists, more or less) a little noumenon.&nbsp; I call it &#8220;little&#8221; because the corresponding two-level interscope may be regarded as a &#8220;big&#8221;
