Michael Jones&#8217;s Book (2025) &#8220;Walking with a Bible and a Gun&#8221;\u00a0 (Part 9 of 27)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0099 Nothing unites a community more than a common enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, what happens when the enemy enters into the community?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0100 Chapter 2 concerns the Salem Witch Trials (starting in 1692) and fictionalized by Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864), whose family lived in Salem since the 1660s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The elected members of the Massachusetts Bay Colony<\/em> adhere to <em>the upper situation level,<\/em> yet project their fears, anxiety and guilt onto <em>the situation-level that would have corresponded to classical Christian reason<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide25.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide25.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide25.png 540w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide25-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the author, <em>one of the drivers of this projection<\/em> is <em>the Calvinist rejection of the Catholic sacrament of confession<\/em>.&nbsp; Confession is a sacrament built on Christ&#8217;s commissioning his disciples to preach and forgive sins.&nbsp; The Puritans turned their backs on those sacraments that empowered Catholic priestly institutions.&nbsp; So, <em>the Puritan rejection of reason<\/em> really applies to <em>Catholic reason,<\/em> not to <em>plain commonsense reasoning<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0101 Okay, <em>even plain commonsense reasoning<\/em> may be suspect, especially, when the Fall of Adam has left humans devoid of reason<sub>3a<\/sub> and willing to use witchcraft<sub>2a<\/sub> in order to cast spells from the wilderness<sub>1a<\/sub>.&nbsp; Here, the &#8220;wilderness&#8221; is both literal (the forests outside the colony) and figurative (the desires inside our bodies).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0102 In effect, <em>the lower situation-level nested form<\/em> becomes <em>a mirror of the upper situation-level nested form<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the Puritan&#8217;s vocabulary is inspired by scripture alone<sub>2b<\/sub>, they have no words<sub>2am<\/sub> (or categories of the mind) for contradicting <em>an impression that witches are operating on the premises<\/em>.&nbsp; They have no vocabulary for conducting <em>an inquisition into whether the rumors have &#8220;natural&#8221;<\/em> (not supernatural) <em>formal and final causes<\/em> (designs and intentions).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0103 Jones discusses Nathaniel Hawthorne&#8217;s story about Goodman Brown.&nbsp; Brown&#8217;s Calvinism takes <em>whatever matter that cannot be unified with the principle of sola scriptura<sub>2bm<\/sub><\/em> into <em>the form of the Satanic<sub>2bf<\/sub>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Jones&#8217;s consideration<\/em> reflects <em>the following associations<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide26.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide26.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10901\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide26.png 540w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Slide26-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0104 <em>Sola scriptura<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em> is the category of the mind<sub>2b<\/sub> where <em>a principle of unity<sub>2bm<\/sub><\/em> [substantiates] <em>the embodiment<sub>2bf<\/sub> of the Puritan identity<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp; <em>An election to receive a covenantal relation with God<\/em> characterizes <em>the principle of unity<sub>2bm<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp; <em>Membership in a church in the Massachusetts Bay Colony<\/em> figures into <em>the embodiment<sub>2bf<\/sub><\/em>. &nbsp;<em>Sola scriptura<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em> emerges from (and situates) the potential of &#8216;grace alone&#8217;<sub>1b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Sola scriptura<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em> virtually situates <em>the Biblical thing<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em> of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which emerges from (and situates) the potential of &#8216;the gun&#8217;<sub>1a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0105 The Biblical thing<sub>2a<\/sub> also constitutes a category of the mind<sub>2a<\/sub>, because the Exodus, when applied to British colonialists, grants <em>immunity of guilt<\/em> for their displacement of the Amalek&#8230;
