Schoonenberg wrote that the Church discovered that the heart, the center of the person, accounts for the free decision for which ‘man’ is responsible.\u00a0 What makes a ‘man’ good or bad before God? \u00a0Not the qualities that can be noticed or measured, nor the consequences of his actions. \u00a0It is the response of the free person which takes shape in these actions.\u00a0 To be sure, the outer and objective structure of his activity is important. But the deepest value lies in the response of the heart.<\/p>\n
It is here that the person expresses ‘himself’ as such.<\/p>\n
[To me, this description of the \u201csoul\u201d calls to mind the dual concepts of consciencespecified<\/sup>1<\/sub> and dispositions1<\/sub> that are habituated by our virtuous or sinful actions.
