{"id":10607,"date":"2026-06-16T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=10607"},"modified":"2025-12-14T15:43:49","modified_gmt":"2025-12-14T15:43:49","slug":"looking-at-eric-santners-book-2016-the-weight-of-all-flesh-part-12-of-28","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=10607","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Eric Santner\u2019s Book (2016)\u00a0The Weight of All Flesh\u00a0(Part 12 of 28)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0236 Every citizen<sup>regular<\/sup>&nbsp;has a dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is this dream&nbsp;<em>the specter of capitalism?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or is this dream another&nbsp;<em>site for exploitation?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0237 Santner attempts to image a historic shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The sublime flesh of the king<\/em>&nbsp;was&nbsp;<em>a theory that situated the subject within the domain of kingship<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This can be seen in the actualities of the situation and content levels of the society tier, diagrammed as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Slide26.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Slide26.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Slide26.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Slide26-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0238 This model, as&nbsp;<em>The Merchant of Venice<\/em>&nbsp;demonstrates, relies on the integrity of the suprasovereign religion.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The values that inform the theory of the dual body of the king<\/em>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<em>a mandate from heaven, weighing the king\u2019s active soul<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0239 The shift to mercantilism transforms the king\u2019s mortal body into&nbsp;<em>an administrative body that would not be judged by the Christian object<sup>relation<\/sup><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;This administrative body is self-anointed.&nbsp;&nbsp;It grasps the sovereign authority to regulate (and therefore judge) actualities in the organization and individual in community (IIC) tiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shift transforms&nbsp;<em>the subject<\/em>&nbsp;into&nbsp;<em>a citizen sustained by a rational spirit and sane soul<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0240 The result may be diagrammed as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Slide27.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Slide27.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10609\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Slide27.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Slide27-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0241 This is how I render Santner\u2019s description of&nbsp;<em>the dispersion of the sublime body of the king into the thingness of commodities<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0242 This model, as&nbsp;<em>The Merchant of Venice<\/em>&nbsp;demonstrates, runs afoul of&nbsp;<em>what Christians call \u201coriginal sin\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neither Antonio nor Shylock are sane.&nbsp;&nbsp;If they were, they would not have cut their deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0243 Also, this model, as David\u2019s painting&nbsp;<em>The Death of Marat<\/em>&nbsp;suggests, runs afoul of the fact that Marat (as the primordial image of all contemporary busy bodies) is both a messenger and recipient of a message: conform or die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marat is crazy without even realizing that he is nuts.&nbsp;&nbsp;He feels invulnerable, even while encapsulated in his tub of mineral waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marat embodies the Revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0244 Citizens<sup>Marat<\/sup>&nbsp;would learn to be more cautious.&nbsp;&nbsp;They would disarm the population before um&#8230; striking at&nbsp;<em>something other than what is there<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is to usurp the regular citizen\u2019s&nbsp;<em>joissance<\/em>, the pound of flesh that cannot be taken without spilling blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0245 However, take note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is my own psychoanalytic interpretation of Santner\u2019s directed (almost free) associations.&nbsp;&nbsp;As such, I rely on a vocabulary specific to Santner\u2019s self-revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is some of that terminology:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Slide28.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Slide28.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Slide28.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Slide28-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0246 Citizen<sup>Marat<\/sup>&nbsp;designates those&nbsp;<em>who thrive in the sovereign office of discipline<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Biopower has all the characteristics of order.&nbsp;&nbsp;The active soul of citizen<sup>Marat<\/sup>&nbsp;exhibits&nbsp;<em>values potentiated by biopower<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mortal body of citizen<sup>Marat<\/sup>&nbsp;is busy.&nbsp;&nbsp;Citizen<sup>Marat<\/sup>&nbsp;is manic, quick to anger and always on the move.&nbsp;&nbsp;Yet, once he starts talking, he puts any sane soul to sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His rulebooks groan with details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0247 Citizen<sup>regular<\/sup>&nbsp;designates&nbsp;<em>those who were once subjects, but now are supposed to be animated by a rational spirit<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0248 That is not all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The citizen<sup>regular<\/sup>&nbsp;will always run afoul of purportedly rational sovereign acts, laws and decrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0249 Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citizen<sup>Marat<\/sup>&nbsp;wants to regulate the activities of the organization tier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0250&nbsp;<em>The regulations of the sovereign<\/em>&nbsp;are grounded on&nbsp;<em>simplifications<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is that not the scientific method?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reduce the problem to cause and effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, that does not work for relational structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reduction ends up representing only isolated features within a relational structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, citizen<sup>Marat<\/sup>, who is a well-indoctrinated expert, attempts to address&nbsp;<em>problematic phenomena in the organization and iic tiers<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He does so through simplification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resulting regulations do not solve the problem.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, they advance&nbsp;<em>the level of sovereign control<\/em>&nbsp;addressing the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0251 To me,&nbsp;<em>Karl Marx<\/em>&nbsp;was&nbsp;<em>a purveyor of simplifications<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Santner\u2019s directed associations<\/em>&nbsp;show that&nbsp;<em>Marxist terminology<\/em>&nbsp;applies to&nbsp;<em>the organization tier<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;These terms label and moralize perceived distortions.&nbsp;&nbsp;They fail to capture&nbsp;<em>a complete picture of the organization tier<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Regulations based on Marxist dogma<\/em>&nbsp;institutionalize and grow&nbsp;<em>the target distortion<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0252 I suspect that Santner\u2019s gambit applies to all the current social sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These disciplines are structured to imitate the empirical sciences of the 1800s and early 1900s, where scientific reductionism required simplification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For relational structures, simplification highlights some elements and occludes others.&nbsp;&nbsp;Simplification necessarily distorts illumination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0253 Ironically, the modern physical sciences have already abandoned knee-jerk reductionism.&nbsp;&nbsp;Starting with quantum mechanics, scientific paradigms have slowly shifted.
