{"id":10514,"date":"2026-05-09T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=10514"},"modified":"2025-11-08T16:08:34","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T16:08:34","slug":"looking-at-daniel-novotnys-book-2013-ens-rationis-from-suarez-to-caramuel-part-18-of-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=10514","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Daniel Novotny\u2019s Book (2013) &#8220;Ens Rationis from Suarez to Caramuel&#8221;\u00a0(Part 18 of 19)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0233 If it is baroque, then how does one fix it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0234 Baroque scholasticism is difficult to access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is written in Latin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus,&nbsp;<em>the format of Aristotle\u2019s inquiry<\/em>&nbsp;can confuse the reader.&nbsp;&nbsp;Novotny\u2019s pithy summaries are marvelous aids for understanding.&nbsp;&nbsp;Also, since Novotny has already surveyed various Baroque scholastics, his intuition serves as a guide.&nbsp;&nbsp;My comments closely track his text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0235 In his work, Novotny aimed to display the dramatic shift in opinion concerning beings of reason between 1600 and 1680 AD.&nbsp;&nbsp;This shift of opinion now raises two postmodern issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0236 One concerns the implications of&nbsp;<em>the first singularity<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The adoption of speech-alone talk (and loss of hand talk) opens the door to&nbsp;<em>explicit abstraction<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The history of philosophy<\/em>&nbsp;may tell&nbsp;<em>the tale of the unfolding of explicit abstraction<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0237 Two, there is another history.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is&nbsp;<em>the historical expression of implicit abstraction<\/em>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are issues to reflect upon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0238 Through Suarez, scholastic inquiry constructs&nbsp;<em>a model of implicit abstraction<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Through Hurtado, Mastri and Belluto, scholastic inquiry explodes the model by placing explicit abstractions into&nbsp;<em>the slot designated for encountered real beings<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then, with Caramuel, scholastic inquiry changes the perspective, turning&nbsp;<em>the being of reason<\/em>&nbsp;into both&nbsp;<em>a real nonbeing<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>an unreal being<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Here is&nbsp;<em>a subject of inquiry<\/em>&nbsp;that defies&nbsp;<em>the logic of actuality<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0239 But Caramuel does not conclude what I state here:&nbsp;&nbsp;Actuality is not everything.&nbsp;&nbsp;Actuality is not all there is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0240 I say this only because Charles S. Peirce opens a new age of understanding.&nbsp;&nbsp;There are three categories to existence: firstness, secondness and thirdness.&nbsp;&nbsp;Firstness is the monadic realm of possibility.&nbsp;&nbsp;Secondness is the dyadic realm of actuality.&nbsp;&nbsp;Thirdness is the triadic realm of normal context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Models of intuitive and explicit abstraction<\/em>&nbsp;display&nbsp;<em>the trajectory of Novotny\u2019s narrative<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;They do so from&nbsp;<em>a truly postmodern stance<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Consequently, they demonstrate&nbsp;<em>the potential of scholasticism in the Age of Triadic Relations<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0241&nbsp;<em>What comes next<\/em>&nbsp;begins where Caramuel left off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0242 What is&nbsp;<em>this gestalt that contains a contradiction<\/em>?&nbsp;&nbsp;Where does his alternate definition of the \u2018being of reason\u2019 lead?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0243 Caramuel answers the question originally posed by Suarez: What are the causes, natures and divisions of beings of reason?&nbsp;&nbsp;He does this by altering the definition of a \u2018being of reason\u2019 into&nbsp;<em>something that Suarez would not recognize<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A \u2018being of reason\u2019 is&nbsp;<em>an extrinsic,&nbsp;linguistically formulated, self-contradiction that is thought of in the manner of an intrinsic unity<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0244 Here is a picture of Caramuel&#8217;s novel concepts, once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Slide44.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Slide44.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10515\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Slide44.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Slide44-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0245 Let me examine the components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0246 First, what is encountered?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caramuel\u2019s redefinition applies to hand talk, hand-speech talk and speech-alone talk.&nbsp;&nbsp;All that is required is&nbsp;<em>a grammatically correct statement that contains a self-contradiction<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What is encountered<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>one element of a dyad in the realm of actuality<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Roughly, this element corresponds to the word \u2018effect\u2019 in the phrase \u2018cause and effect\u2019.&nbsp;&nbsp;The senses come into play.&nbsp;&nbsp;For hand talk and speech-alone talk, the encountered being<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;is a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0247 What happens next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Suarez\u2019s model, the efficient intellect then projects a \u2018being of reason\u2019 into the slot that would roughly correspond to \u2018cause\u2019.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>The being of reason<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;accounts for&nbsp;<em>what is encountered<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is&nbsp;<em>an object within the subject of the intellect<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The efficient intellect<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;is able to project \u2018an intrinsically unified being of reason<sub>2a<\/sub>\u2019 because it emerges from&nbsp;<em>the possibility inherent in unity<sub>1b<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0248 This explains how \u2018beings of reason\u2019 arise from extrinsic (to the subject, the situated intellect) statements.&nbsp;&nbsp;This also explains how \u2018beings of reason\u2019 are projections of the efficient intellect<sub>2b<\/sub>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>0233 If it is baroque, then how does one fix it? 0234 Baroque scholasticism is difficult to access.
