(Part 7 of 16)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0074 What about genetics?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In section three, genetics enters the author&#8217;s picture of the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It enters as a confounder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0075 A confounder?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider the following two-level interscope.&nbsp;&nbsp;It looks almost identical to the two-level interscope for natural history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide20-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide20-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide20-4.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide20-4-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0076 The normal context of body development<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;brings the actuality of a phenotype<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;into relation with its genotype<sub>1b<\/sub>, where the genotype expresses the potential<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;of an individual&#8217;s DNA<sub>2a<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question is, &#8220;Can&nbsp;<em>the actuality independent of the adapting species<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;somehow influence&nbsp;<em>the DNA<sub>2a<\/sub><\/em>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>the way that the DNA is read<sub>1b<\/sub>?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer is, &#8220;Yes, through&nbsp;<em>natural selection<sub>3b<\/sub><\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The influence is not direct.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is intersectional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0077 For example, let me hypothesize that children are able to drink their mother&#8217;s milk because they produce an enzyme, called &#8220;lactase&#8221;, that is able to digest lactose, one of the sugars in mother&#8217;s milk.&nbsp;&nbsp;As the child is weaned, the need to produce this enzyme diminishes and by adulthood, the adult cannot digest lactose, because milk is not part of the diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0078 So, with&nbsp;<em>the above figure in mind,<\/em>&nbsp;the phenotype changes from childhood to adulthood.&nbsp;&nbsp;This makes perfect sense, because adults are quite different than children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0079 Now, let me go back to&nbsp;<em>the natural history version<\/em>&nbsp;of the two-level interscopes and consider&nbsp;<em>what happens when cows enter into the human household<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;At first, humans protect cows and then later, humans feed cows.&nbsp;&nbsp;That sounds like a good deal.&nbsp;&nbsp;In effect, humans are treating cows like other humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0080 Cows adapt by losing&nbsp;<em>their fear of humans<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;One would not think that this is&nbsp;<em>an adaptation<sub>2b<\/sub>,<\/em>&nbsp;but it is.&nbsp;&nbsp;Plus, other adaptations take place.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Female cows<\/em>&nbsp;produce&nbsp;<em>more milk<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;They do so with consistency.&nbsp;&nbsp;The bulls, on the other hand, get culled.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, the bull that does not ask to be culled is more likely to survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide21-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide21-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide21-4.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide21-4-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0081 From the humans&#8217;
