Definition should belong to thirdness.  But, definition (as thirdness) is deferred in Saussure’s semiology3a<\/sub> because language is scientifically characterized as two arbitrarily related systems of differences, parole2a<\/sub> and langue2a<\/sub>.  There is no substance,<\/em> so to speak.  Okay, the substance<\/em> is a completely habitual association<\/em>.  Consequently, the scientist does not know the final cause<\/em> for why a particular {langue as matter [substantiates] spoken word as form}2a<\/sub> exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0871 In contrast, the formal cause is obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saussure’s semiology3a<\/sub> contextualizes the above dyad2a<\/sub> as a material being2a<\/sub>.  The actuality of a spoken (and written) word2af<\/sub><\/em>  justifies the scholar regarding it2af<\/sub> as a thing2a<\/sub> that is subject to natural inquiry, of which Aristotle’s hylomorphe is the first abstraction<\/em>.  An encountered thing2a<\/sub><\/em> consists in two contiguous real elements, matter2am<\/sub><\/em> and form2af<\/sub><\/em>.  The spoken (or written) word2a<\/sub><\/em> is situated as an<\/em> encountered thing2a<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is there another way to say that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The structure (or system) of spoken words3b<\/sub><\/em> contextualizes {written words as matter2bm<\/sub>, as they substantiate history as a literary form2bf<\/sub>}2b<\/sub>.  Spoken words2af<\/sub> <\/em>are forms on the content level<\/em>.  They2af<\/sub><\/em> become matter2bm<\/sub> on the situation level,<\/em>as they fit into the sensible<\/em> (or material) construction of history<\/em> (as a literary text)2bf<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
