Actuality<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emerges from potential<sub>1<\/sub>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Normal context<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;contextualizes actuality<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0524 The fractal nature of precission allows a repetition where&nbsp;<em>one category-based nested form belongs to firstness<\/em>(content) and&nbsp;<em>an adjacent higher category-based nested form belongs to secondness<\/em>&nbsp;(situation).&nbsp;&nbsp;Thus,&nbsp;<em>the interscope<\/em>manifests as&nbsp;<em>a fractal image of the category-based nested form<\/em>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<em>an adjacent larger scale<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then,&nbsp;<em>three-tiers<\/em>&nbsp;manifest on<em>&nbsp;the adjacent higher scale than the interscope<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0525 Notably,&nbsp;<em>the scale of the TMS inquiry<\/em>&nbsp;is limited to two tiers, belonging to firstness and secondness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least, that is how it seems to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within each interscope, two signs connect adjacent levels (precission) without qualification.&nbsp;&nbsp;One requires qualification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medieval scholastics label the regular signs as&nbsp;<em>specificative extrinsic formal causality<\/em>&nbsp;(the specifying sign) and&nbsp;<em>exemplar extrinsic formal causality<\/em>&nbsp;(the exemplar sign).&nbsp;&nbsp;The former joins content and situation.&nbsp;&nbsp;The latter binds situation and perspective.&nbsp;&nbsp;If the signs occur within a system, then the causalities change from&nbsp;<em>extrinsic<\/em>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>intrinsic<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0526 Uspenskij offers a typology of three signs (listed during the second interview on page 431).&nbsp;&nbsp;To me, they associate to the scholastic labels quite nicely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide27-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide27-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide27-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide27-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0527 The second interview, conducted May 27, 2012, asks thirteen questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0528 The first question concerns how Uspenskij defines the word, &#8220;sign&#8221;, with the implication that, if the answer is a triadic relation, then the definition goes with Peirce&#8217;s framework, called &#8220;semiotics&#8221;, and if the answer is a dyadic relation, then the definition goes with Saussure&#8217;s framework, called &#8220;semiology&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The old man says that a sign has both form and meaning (page 425-426).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0529 Of course, this is a semiological formulation. &#8220;Form&#8221; associates with signifier<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;(and for speech-alone talk,&nbsp;<em>parole<sub>2af<\/sub><\/em>).&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8220;Meaning&#8221; associates with signified<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;(and for speech-alone talk,&nbsp;<em>langue<sub>2am<\/sub><\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0530 But that is not all, there is an unspoken third term.&nbsp;&nbsp;This third term comes into play as Uspenskij rules out some disciplines as not semiotic (that is, dealing with form and not meaning) and classifies some disciplines as semiotic (dealing with both) (pages 427-428)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third is &#8220;a relation between form and meaning&#8221;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0531 Uspenskij characterizes a &#8220;sign&#8221; as having form and meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is that the same as the relation between literary form<sub>2af<\/sub>&nbsp;and the potential underlying a positivist language<sub>2am<\/sub>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This question is left unspoken, because&nbsp;<em>making the connection<\/em>&nbsp;is obviously&nbsp;<em>a human trait<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Humans connect a sign-vehicle (SV) and its sign-object (SO) all the time.&nbsp;&nbsp;Plus, they occasionally realize that they are exercising a sign-interpretant (SI).&nbsp;&nbsp;One funny implication is that, for a scientist, this realization gets labeled &#8220;metaphysics&#8221;, at best, and &#8220;anthropomorphism&#8221;, at worst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0532 What happens to the specifying sign-relation when I suggest that the signified is not&nbsp;<em>langue<sub>2am<\/sub>,<\/em>&nbsp;but rather a sign-object (SO<sub>i<\/sub>) and the signifier is not&nbsp;<em>parole<sub>2af<\/sub>,<\/em>&nbsp;but rather a sign-vehicle (SV<sub>s<\/sub>), as shown in the following figure?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide28-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide28-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10014\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide28-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide28-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0533 In response, a reader may ask, &#8220;Is that a trick question?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it is, it is a nice trick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0534 It suggests, as does Uspenskij&#8217;s answer to the first question, that there is a third term, &#8220;the relation between a signifier and its signified<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;in the normal context of Saussure&#8217;s semiology<sub>3a<\/sub>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of identifying the signified<sub>1a<\/sub>&nbsp;and the signifier<sub>1a<\/sub>, as well as naming the SO<sub>i<\/sub>&nbsp;and the SV<sub>s<\/sub>, seems obvious in&nbsp;<em>our current Lebenswelt<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;We neglect the SI<sub>i<\/sub>, which may the only sign-element that requires an explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0535 Fortunately, speech-alone talk allows us to label the SI<sub>i<\/sub>&nbsp;as the normal context<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp;and potential<sub>1<\/sub>&nbsp;of the actuality<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;of the SO<sub>i<\/sub>, thereby making each sign-element subject to inquiry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can speech-alone talk do that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Speech-alone talk<\/em>&nbsp;can&nbsp;<em>label anything,<\/em>&nbsp;even things that cannot be pictured or pointed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See&nbsp;<em>A Primer on Implicit and Explicit Abstraction,<\/em>&nbsp;by Razie Mah, available at smashwords and other e-book venues.&nbsp;&nbsp;Or, read on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0536 Could&nbsp;<em>explicit abstraction<\/em>&nbsp;occur ten-thousand years ago, at the very end of&nbsp;<em>the Lebenswelt that we evolved in?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No,&nbsp;<em>hand- and hand-speech talk<\/em>&nbsp;cannot engage in&nbsp;<em>explicit abstraction<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our ancestors could not explicitly abstract the terms, &#8220;mumbo-jumbo&#8221;
