{"id":10007,"date":"2026-01-21T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=10007"},"modified":"2025-10-10T17:50:03","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T17:50:03","slug":"looking-at-ekaterina-velmezova-and-kalevi-kulls-article-2017-boris-uspenskij-part-10-of-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/?p=10007","title":{"rendered":"Looking at Ekaterina Velmezova and Kalevi Kull&#8217;s Article (2017) &#8220;Boris Uspenskij&#8230;&#8221; (Part 10 of 19)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>0507 So, where was I?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where have I traveled?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have walked through&nbsp;<em>the first of two interviews<\/em>&nbsp;with a prominent member of the Tartu-Moscow School of Semiotics at its first ascendant.&nbsp;&nbsp;Because my approach capitalizes (some would say, &#8220;exploits&#8221;) Peirce&#8217;s formulations, my examination adds value to the discussion.&nbsp;&nbsp;Diagrams of purely relational structures, such as the interscope, permits a visualization of semiotic changes and developments through time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0508 The second interview, starting on page 425, discusses thirteen questions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Predefined questions<\/em>&nbsp;offer&nbsp;<em>an awkward format for an interview<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Given the hyperventilation that occurs during the interview on August 25, 2011, the hope is for a more structured encounter at Uspenskij&#8217;s villa in Rome on May 27, 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interview concerns Uspenskij&#8217;s 2007 book,&nbsp;<em>Ego Loquens: Language and the communicative space<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0509 The Latin term, &#8220;<em>ego loquens<\/em>&#8220;, roughly transliterates into &#8220;I speak&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course,&nbsp;<em>the end of Descartes&#8217; famous slogan<\/em>&nbsp;immediately comes to mind, &#8220;therefore I am.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I speak, therefore I am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0510 But, what am I?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps, I am language<sub>2b<\/sub>&nbsp;(that another person can read like a literary text<sub>2b<\/sub>) as well as a communicative space (like the way that I, as a literary text<sub>2a<\/sub>, entangle&nbsp;<em>a communal cognitive space<\/em>&nbsp;called &#8220;language<sub>2a<\/sub>&#8220;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0511 How confounding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A communal cognitive&#8230; er&#8230; communicative space<sub>2a<\/sub>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>the language<sub>2am<\/sub>&nbsp;that is entangled by the literary text<sub>2af<\/sub>,<\/em>&nbsp;not as&nbsp;<em>a thing itself<sub>2b<\/sub><\/em>, but as&nbsp;<em>a model<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;of structural<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;and semiological<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;signification<sub>3c<\/sub><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0512 I hope that this statement justifies&nbsp;<em>the use of the title of Uspenskij&#8217;s book<\/em>&nbsp;to label&nbsp;<em>the fundament and derivative interscopes,<\/em>&nbsp;as shown below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide24-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide24-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10008\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide24-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.raziemah.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Slide24-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>0513 Look closely at the above figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can the reader see a triadic relation where a semiological<sub>3a<\/sub>&nbsp;structuralist<sub>3b<\/sub>&nbsp;model<sub>2c<\/sub>&nbsp;(SV<sub>i<\/sub>) stands for a literary text as form<sub>2af<\/sub>&nbsp;(SO<sub>i<\/sub>) potentiated by meaning<sub>1a<\/sub>, presence<sub>1b<\/sub>&nbsp;and message<sub>1c<\/sub>&nbsp;in the normal context of a defining intellect (SI<sub>i<\/sub>)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0514 At this point, I would like to introduce the interventional sign-relation, first brought to visualization in&nbsp;<em>Comments on Sasha Newell&#8217;s Article (2018) &#8220;The Affectiveness of Symbols&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;and then used as a tool in&nbsp;<em>Looking at John Deely&#8217;s Book (2010) &#8220;Semiotic Animal<\/em>&#8220;.
